State Diplomacy, Egyptology, and Colonialism

The Catalan diplomat and jurist, Eduard Toda i Güell, represents a pivotal figure in nineteenth-century Spain's engagement with the Arab world. This brief study examines two key aspects of his legacy: his acquisition of over 1,350 Egyptian antiquities during a short posting in Cairo, and the enduring relevance of the travelogue he published about his time in Egypt.
