University Petitions

General Information and overview

Students are expected to abide by CSU's University Regulations, as defined in the Undergraduate Catalog.

The University Petition Committee considers petitions from students requesting exceptions to university policies - they generally center around degree requirements (particularly general education) and registration requirements.

Students are responsible for preparing the student narrative, obtaining supporting documents, and submitting the appropriate petition forms.

It is to the student's advantage to submit a complete, well-documented petition.
Students should allocate enough time to complete the process.
It is unlikely that this process will all be completed on this one site visit.

Petitions that do not include approved forms of documentation to support the claim will not be considered

Please note: Affordability is not a justification for petition approval.

Please visit Campus411 All-in-1 Enrollment Services to discuss alternative solutions.

Meeting Deadlines

The UPC typically meets monthly during Fall and Spring semesters and twice over the summer.
Students will be responsible for submitting all materials by the following deadlines:

  • September 25 for the October meeting
  • October 23 for the November meeting
  • November 27 for the December meeting

Time Frame / Process after Submission

Students can expect a decision within two weeks of the petition meeting where the request and all supporting documentation was submitted before the meeting deadline.

The committee's decisions will be sent to your CSU email account. If you do not check that account regularly, be sure to set up email forwarding.

Denied Petitions

If a petition is denied, the student may appeal the decision if they can provide additional information to support their claim. Prior to beginning the appeal process, students should contact their Academic Advisor via Starfish to determine why their original petition has been denied, and to get suggestions for what may be helpful to provide in an appeal.

Financial Issues

Affordability is not a justification for petition approval.

The University Petition process does not include the handling of refunds or waivers of money owed to the University. Please visit Campus411 All-in-1 Enrollment Services for more information.
