ztfusion

The information given here is for installing software by Freedom Scientific on campus computers. The links below are the product download pages for each application. The instructions on this page are only for computers that will remain on the CSU network. If the computer will be used off of the CSU network, you will want to sign up for a activation for the product through the Freedom Scientific Sponsored Software Portal.

  • Fusion is an installation for both JAWS and ZoomText. Fusion makes both applications work seamlessly together.
  • JAWS is an application that is a full functioned screen reader for computer users with severe visual impairments.
  • ZoomText is an application that provides magnification and color adjustments for users who are visually impaired. It also includes some text to speech for reading content from the computer.
  • OpenBook is a desktop app that is used for scanning and reading physical documents. This is a legacy product that is not used much anymore.

Installing ZoomText Fusion installs JAWS, ZoomText, and an additional app called Fusion which is both combined. This should make installation and maintenance easier. The installation of fusion is recommended for use in general purpose workstations. The installations for JAWS or ZoomText Specifically would be for workstations with a specific user that only needs that specific application.

Activation of the Applications

To activate the computer using our licenses, the computer must be network connected. People can also use OpenVPN to connect to the CSU network for activation. Follow the below steps to setup a computer to connect to our licensing server. Do not do this if an activation was obtained through the Freedom Scientific Sponsored Software Portal.

  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Open System
  3. Click on the Advanced System Settings link
  4. Click the Environment Variables button
  5. Click the New button under System Variables
The environment variable needs to be setup as a System Variable and not a User Variable or it will not authorize the software properly.
  6. Enter LSFORCEHOST into the name field and 137.148.28.18 into the value field
  7. Click OK to close the two open dialogs

Recommendations for Application Settings

You will want to run each program after installation to go through the Startup Wizards to select the following settings.

  • Do not run at the Login Screen. There are built-in Windows features (Magnifier and Narrator apps) that can be used to magnify or read out loud the login prompts.
  • Do not enable start after login for all users.
  • Disable or just do not enable Voice Assistant. Individual users can enable that if they wish.
  • Do not disable the Num Lock at startup. That is a very useful feature for regular users of JAWS but will confuse the heck out of other users.
  • If you miss a setting the Startup Wizard can be run from the Help menu of each program.

Creating Hotkeys for Launching Software

It is incredibly helpful for people sitting down at a computer to be able to launch the applications with a set of keystrokes instead of trying to find the icons or searching through menus. This can be done on the desktop icons if they will be left on the desktop, or it can also be done to the icons under the Start Menu Programs folder. Right-Click on the icons for JAWS, ZoomText, and Fusion and under Properties add the following Shortcut Keys.

  • JAWS - CTRL+ALT+J
  • ZoomText - CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+Z
  • Fusion - CTRL+ALT+F
  • OpenBook CTRL+ALT+O
  • Please delete the FS Reader icon from the desktop

Troubleshooting

Activation Problems

If any of these programs load the Activation dialog when launched one of the following has happened.

  • The computer is probably not pointed to the correct license server. Look at steps 1-7 listed above and make sure that the environment variable LSFORCEHOST is set as a System Variable and the IP address used is 137.148.28.18
  • The Environment variable is set in the User variable section and not as a System variable.
  • The computer may not be connecting to the network properly or is connecting to CSUGuest instead of CSU Wireless. If the computer is connected off network these programs will only run in a 40-minute demo mode.

Driver Issues

If installing this program on an image that will be rolled out to many machines with different hardware configurations, the install may need to be run on the local machine to repair driver issues caused by the change in software drivers. This does not take long per machine.

Running Updates

Updates can be run for these programs by going to the Help Menu and clicking Check for Updates. Installing updates requires a restart.

Home Use

If the software is to be installed on an off-campus computer, it would be better to have the user request an activation for home use from Freedom Scientific. The activation can be requested at the following link by using the persons CSU e-mail address and selecting the product they need the license for.
