Read & Write Gold is a powerful set of reading and writing assistance tools for people with learning disabilities. Cleveland State University has purchased an unlimited site license so that our students can benefit from these tools on their personal computers. Visit the Read & Write Installation Files and Instructions to get the installation files for the program. Installation files can only be accessed by an active student account. Pleas contact the Assistive technology Specialist at firstname.lastname@example.org to request an appointment to learn how to use the product or for support.
Read & Write 12
Read & Write 12 is now available for students at CSU. There are some differences in the presentation of the toolbar. The difference between versions is more drastic in Windows. The updates attempt to make the product uniform across operating systems. Students can also install and run the demonstration version of the product from the Texthelp website using their CampusNet Login and activating through the related Microsoft account.
Students using Read & Write while taking exams in Testing Services will be using version 11.5 which is what is installed on those machines. Because of the activations methods used there are currently no plans to upgrade the licenses used in Testing Services. All computers running this software in Testing Services are running Windows. Students will need to be familiar with how to adjust their reading options in version 11.5 when taking an exam in Testing Services.
For students receiving alternative text, Read & Write Gold has excellent reading features and the ability to do optical character recognition on documents which are image files. The reading tools that will be helpful for our students receiving alternative text are the ability to read from Word documents and browsers, the PDF Reader, and DAISY reader. Read & Write Gold also has a variety of high quality voices available for download to use with the product. Among these high-quality voices are speech engines for different English dialects and several European languages.
Read & Write Gold is available in most campus computer labs, in the Assistive Technology Lab, and on computers in Testing Services. The software is also available for students that are not registered with disability services. It is especially good for students who speak English as a 2nd language.
