Commencement Ceremony

Sandra R. WilliamsWe were honored to welcome former Ohio Senate and House member Sandra R. Williams as our commencement speaker.

Williams, who joined Charter Communications-Spectrum as Director of State Government Affairs earlier this year, served in the Ohio Senate representing the 21st district from 2014 - 2022. Her Ohio House of Representatives tenure spanned from 2007-2014; her district included the eastern two-thirds of Cleveland, as well as the east-side suburbs of Bratenahl, Cleveland Heights, Garfield Heights, Newburgh Heights, Shaker Heights and University Heights.

Williams is a Cleveland native where she attended Cleveland Public Schools and Cleveland State University for undergraduate and graduate degrees. Read more.

Kid LeoWe were also pleased to present Lawrence James Travagliante —best known to Clevelanders by his on-air moniker Kid Leo— with the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa during the commencement ceremony.

A Cleveland native, Travagliante enrolled at CSU for the fall quarter of 1968 with the intention to study engineering, but like many college students, he changed course across 12 quarters of study—from engineering to business and finally, communication.

Travagliante left CSU prior to graduating to join Cleveland rock station WMMS (100.7 FM, “The Buzzard”) initially as a fill-in disc jockey. During his 16-year tenure at the station, WMMS was consistently regarded as one of the highest-rated radio stations in the country. Read more.

University Valedictorian

Meet Veronika Stropko-Jorgensen, the inaugural valedictorian of the newly formed Levin College of Public Affairs and Education. Stropkp-Jorgensen now holds bachelor degrees in sociology and psychology. As she moves onto the next part of her journey, she advises students: "Challenge yourself. Take the harder class. It’s all about learning. If you know what works best for you, pursue that—but challenge that notion sometimes. I have never once regretted pushing myself to do something that was difficult. Not once."
