Featured Presentation: Supporting Extended Conversation in AAC Technologies

On May 1, 2025, the Center for Human-Machine Systems hosted a special NRTea Time presentation featuring Professor Annalu Waller, OBE, a chartered rehabilitation engineer and Professor of Human Communication Technologies at the University of Dundee who has been awarded an Office of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen of England. With over 30 years of experience in human-computer interaction, assistive technology, and inclusive education, Professor Waller shared insights into the development of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) systems that support extended, meaningful conversation for individuals with complex communication needs. Her team’s interdisciplinary research blends computational linguistics and HCI principles to improve communication access and independence for AAC users.
This hybrid event attracted 43 registrants from eight different departments and disciplines across Cleveland State University, as well as several attendees from outside the university community. The presentation reflects the CSU TECH Hub’s mission to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and leverage technology to drive inclusive innovation, research, and real-world community impact.
