TOPIC Inside the Black Box of Medical Device Engineering and Design: A Case Study of Lazurite's Wireless Surgical Camera

ABSTRACT Medical devices are marvels of engineering and design. These black-boxed technologies, though, are often specialty specific and incredibly expensive. In this talk, I open the lid on that black box, and discuss the organizing principles behind the development of the ArthroFree System, the first wireless camera for arthroscopy and endoscopy. This talk offers a few key lessons from the moments of the original vision of the device and how it changed at the stages of design, engineering, human factors testing, and even during market entry.
