Cleveland State University – December 2019 Issue

Membership News – Power in Numbers!

At Cleveland State University, as of the end of October, our current SEIU bargaining unit member total hovers around 400. The bargaining unit is the group of employees who are eligible to become dues-paying members of the CSU Chapter of SEIU. After an all-time high membership percentage of 90% in the spring of 2017, dues-paying members have slipped to a bit under 85%. We would like to increase it closer to 90% before we go to the negotiating table in the spring 0f 2020!  If you know of someone in your department who has not yet completed a membership application, please let them know of the value of being in a union and point them in the direction of any delegate or simply have them fill out this online membership form

Looking to Get Involved?

  • Negotiating Team: We are interested in hearing concerns YOU want brought to the bargaining table. Our current contract expires on October 31, 2020. We plan to elect Negotiating Team Members and Alternates in January, after the Holiday Break. Can’t attend a meeting but have a concern? Contact a delegate!
  • The Membership Committee is now looking for people to help out with our orientation presentation for new CSU employees. This entails a small time commitment of only 2-3 hours a year (or you can serve as an alternate and serve as a “back-up”).
  • Contact Tom Hurray or Rita Grabowski to learn more about these opportunities and more ways to get involved!

Contract Information

The more eyes on the contact, the better we are able to identify and address contract concerns in our next negotiation! Please take some time to review the contract and email a delegate with any questions or concerns you would like to bring up during the next contract negotiation. View the contract: Contract 2017-2020

What is a Union Contract? The union contract is meant to protect our common interests and improve working conditions. It serves as an intermediary between the employer and employees and allows the members to negotiate more favorable working conditions through collective bargaining. For example, this past year all SEIU members received a 2.5% raise, made possible and guaranteed through contract negotiation. In addition, when in a union, you are never alone when advocating for a fair working environment if the terms of the contract are being violated. A team of delegates is available to provide each member with support.

Tips, Tricks, and Navigating Cleveland State University

Going on FMLA leave? Did you know that you can suspend your parking pass during that time? Contact Parking Services to reserve your permit while you are on leave, suspending payment until you return. Because of member outreach, the information has been added to the website and we want to spread the word!
