FAQ and Responses

  1. How will faculty workload be calculated, especially for non-standard credit courses and doctoral supervision? All public institutions are still waiting for the ODHE to finalize their workload guidelines by Sep 30, 2025. We will only be able to finalize our policy after that. Once the policy is finalized, we will publish Guidelines for Determining Workload for details about implementation of workload policy.

  2. What is the timeline and process for implementing the new workload policies? The new workload policy will be implemented for the 26-27 Academic Year.

  3. Will course releases for program directors still be available? Yes. A combination of course releases and stipends will be available. Determinants will include size of the program, accreditation responsibilities and number of students served.

  4. Will course releases for research credits for non-TT faculty still be available? While this won’t be a typical practice, given that we hire non-TT to meet our teaching needs, the scholarship of teaching is an important part of our work, so we may consider it on a case-by-case basis.

  5. What are the standards and criteria for annual faculty performance evaluations? The annual performance evaluation for faculty will be based on workload allocation. The evaluation will be based on the amount of time allocated for teaching, RSCA, service as well as any administrative or clinical supervision responsibilities assigned for the year. Given the differences in expectation from department to department, we would expect that these standards and criteria are set at the departmental level.

  6. Will faculty be required to maintain research activity regardless of teaching load? All tenure track/tenured faculty would be expected to maintain research activity. The assigned workload of each faculty member determines what they are expected to do and would be reflected in the annual faculty evaluation.

  7. What is the status and future of faculty credit banks? There will be no credit banks going forward. The status of the current balances in the credit bank is a topic of negotiation with the AAUP.

  8. How will retrenchment policies be applied, and will tenure and seniority be considered? Yes, we do expect that tenure and seniority will play a major role in any implementation of a retrenchment policy, if such implementation is necessitated.

  9. What safeguards will ensure fair treatment and governance for faculty under SB1? The implementation steps for each of these policies will include review at multiple levels. Some of these processes will also include faculty review and participation. There will also be established appeal processes to ensure fairness.

  10. Is the institution of tenure going away at CSU? No. The institution of tenure and all its traditional protections relative to academic freedom will continue to be maintained at CSU. The documents that govern tenure will be codified by a policy adopted by the Board of Trustees.
