Student Experience Project

What is SEP, and Why Does It Matter?

The Student Engagement Project (SEP) is a collaborative initiative that brings together university leaders, faculty, researchers, and national education organizations to advance innovative, research-based teaching practices that support student success. SEP is focused on creating equitable learning environments where all students feel valued, connected, and empowered to achieve their academic goals.

At its core, SEP helps faculty implement evidence-based strategies that improve student engagement, strengthen a sense of belonging, and increase student persistence and degree attainment. By fostering inclusive and supportive learning experiences, faculty play a critical role in helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Faculty who participated in SEP Cohorts 1, 2, and 3 have already transformed courses and learning experiences across campus, applying proven practices that positively impact student outcomes. Their work has helped build a growing community of educators committed to innovation, excellence, and student-centered teaching.

Why SEP Matters

  • Promotes equitable and inclusive learning environments.
  • Strengthens students' sense of belonging and connection.
  • Encourages evidence-based teaching practices.
  • Improves student engagement, persistence, and success.
  • Builds a collaborative community of faculty innovators.
  • Supports institutional goals for student achievement and degree completion.

When faculty succeed in creating engaging and inclusive classrooms, students are more likely to persist, achieve, and reach their full potential. SEP provides the tools, community, and support to make that impact possible.
