NEOMED Students Tour Campus District

IMG_3204.JPGStudents from the Northeast Ohio Medical University-Cleveland State University Partnership for Urban Health recently toured the Campus District neighborhood to learn more about the populations served and health issues in the area.

Campus District, Inc. is the community development corporation that serves the neighborhood which houses CSU. It encompasses Cuyahoga Community College, the Superior Arts District and Lakefront Industrial area just north of Lakeside Avenue.

The students learned about the shelters housed in the neighborhood and some of the issues associated with mental health care, drug use and alcohol addiction. The tour was led by Campus District Inc.'s Kaela Geschke.

"As we walked through the streets of Payne, Superior, St. Clair and Lakeside, we saw the homeless meandering around the city, preparing to stand in line so that they may get shelter for the night," a student wrote. "We had no idea that the level of homelessness in that part of Cleveland was so high. It was shocking."

Many of the students did not realize how many people are homeless, or live in poverty within walking distance of the university.

"Seeing the level of homelessness not just in this district but all throughout the city," one student said, "helped us to further realize the lack of adeqaute health care that exists...It was all very humbling."
