CSU Theatre & Dance Celebrates Spring with the Musical She Loves Me

CLEVELAND (February 10, 2022) – Cleveland State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will celebrate the beginning of the 2022 spring semester with the musical She Loves Me. Love letters take center stage in this musical in the Helen Rosenfeld Lewis Bialosky Lab Theatre at Playhouse Square, running February 24 - March 6, 2022. The production is directed by Eugene Sumlin, Cleveland-based actor and director.

“It’s a big romantic musical, perfect for this time of year,” said Holly Holsinger, Chair and Associate Professor of CSU’s Department of Theatre and Dance. “Beautiful costumes, a robust set design and a heartfelt story arc—a production powered by CSU’s hard-working student artists and performers—makes this production a real treat for everyone.”

With book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and music by Jerry Bock, She Loves Me is an intimate production about mistaken identity, true love and friendship. Amalia and Georg often don't see eye to eye. After both respond to a lonely-hearts advertisement in the newspaper, they now live for the love letters that they exchange, but their admirers remain unknown. The production is based on the 1940 classic Jimmy Stewart-Margaret Sullivan film, The Shop Around the Corner, and the 1989 Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan movie, You’ve Got Mail.

“Filled with wonderful characters and beautiful music, I believe you are going to enjoy this gem of a musical. She Loves Me is a wonderful show and one of America’s underrated musicals,” said Sumlin.

Performances run Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are available through Playhouse Square by phone at (216) 241-6000, online and in person at the Playhouse Square Box Office.

UPDATE 3/1: Please note all shows essentially sold-out. A final added performance will take place on Wednesday, March 2nd at 7:30 p.m.
