Pharmacy Technician: CPht Certification
Becoming a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Ohio
A pharmacy technician career can be a strong entry point into healthcare. Pharmacy technicians support pharmacists by helping prepare medications, manage prescription information, assist with inventory, and serve patients in pharmacy settings. In Ohio, students should understand that training, national certification, and state registration are related, but they are not the same thing.
This page provides a general overview of the basic steps for becoming a pharmacy technician in Ohio. Students should not rely solely on this information. Requirements may change, and students are responsible for contacting the appropriate certifying organizations, licensing authorities, and employers to confirm current professional requirements.
Step 1: Complete a Pharmacy Technician Training Program
The first step is completing a pharmacy technician training program that prepares you for the knowledge and skills required in the field.
For students pursuing national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, or PTCB, ONE of the eligibility pathways is completion of a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program. PTCB-recognized programs are reviewed by PTCB and are designed to provide foundational knowledge that can help students prepare for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam, also known as the PTCE. PTCB notes that students should also review the PTCE content outline and use supplemental study resources as needed.
Cleveland State University is a PTCB-recognized training provider. Students may also search for other recognized programs through the official PTCB Recognized Education/Training Program Directory.
Step 2: Become Eligible for National Certification
Students who want to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician, or CPhT, through PTCB must meet PTCB’s eligibility requirements and pass the PTCE.
PTCB currently provides two main eligibility pathways for the PTCE:
- Pathway 1: Education
Complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, or be within 60 days of completion at the time of application. - Pathway 2: Work Experience
Complete at least 500 hours of equivalent pharmacy technician work experience. PTCB describes this pathway as an option for experienced technicians who were not able to complete a PTCB-recognized training program
Understand the sequence cleaerly. The education pathway or work-experience pathway helps establish eligibility to apply for the PTCE. A student becomes nationally certified only after meeting eligibility requirements and earning a passing score on the PTCE.
Step 3: Pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam
The PTCE is the national certification exam administered by PTCB. Students who pass the exam earn the PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician credential, commonly called the CPhT.
PTCB lists several certification requirements, including completion of an eligible education or work-experience pathway, disclosure of criminal or State Board of Pharmacy registration/licensure actions, compliance with PTCB policies, and a passing score on the PTCE.
Step 4: Register with the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy
Ohio has its own registration requirements for pharmacy technicians. National certification and Ohio registration are connected, but they are separate steps.
In Ohio, individuals must have an active pharmacy technician registration before performing pharmacy technician duties. The Ohio Board of Pharmacy states that an application in “Pending,” “Submitted,” or “In Review” status does not authorize someone to work as a pharmacy technician.
Ohio recognizes different pharmacy technician registration categories, including:
- Pharmacy Technician Trainee
- Registered Pharmacy Technician
- Certified Pharmacy Technician
Students should review the Ohio Board of Pharmacy requirements carefully and select the registration category that fits their situation and career goal.
Typical Ohio Registration Requirements
Requirements vary depending on the registration category, but applicants should generally be prepared to provide:
- An application through Ohio eLicense
- Proof of age and identity
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent documentation
- Documentation of completed technician training, when required
- Proof of national certification for the Certified Pharmacy Technician category
- State and federal criminal background check through fingerprinting
- Payment of applicable registration fees
For Certified Pharmacy Technician registration, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy states that applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete an approved technician training program, and hold current national certification from PTCB or ExCPT.
Important Note About Training, Certification, and Registration
Completing a pharmacy technician training program is an important step, but it is not the same as becoming certified or registered.
A training program prepares you for the field and may help you meet eligibility requirements for a national certification exam. National certification is awarded by a certifying organization such as PTCB after you meet eligibility requirements and pass the exam. Ohio registration is handled separately by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy and is required before performing pharmacy technician duties in an Ohio pharmacy.
Student Checklist
Before enrolling, students should ask:
- Does this program prepare me for the PTCB exam?
- Is the program PTCB-recognized?
- What additional study will I need before taking the PTCE?
- Do I want to apply as a registered pharmacy technician or a certified pharmacy technician in Ohio?
- What documentation will I need for Ohio eLicense?
- Will I need fingerprinting and background checks before I can register?
- Does my intended employer require national certification?
Where to Learn More
Students should review the official PTCB certification requirements and the Ohio Board of Pharmacy registration guidance before applying for certification or registration. Requirements can change, and students are responsible for meeting the current requirements at the time they apply.
Contacting the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board directly is the learner's responsibility as part of their pre-enrollment due diligence.
