Cleveland State University’s Dental Assistant training prepares learners for entry-level positions as chairside dental assistants. The purpose of the program is to help learners build the foundational knowledge needed to pursue entry-level dental assisting employment and to prepare for optional certification opportunities. These certification opportunities include the DANB Radiation Health and Safety exam and the NWCA Dental Assisting Clinical Certification.

Students should understand that employer requirements vary by job, workplace, and assigned duties. Some employers hire entry-level dental assistants and provide additional on-the-job training. Other employers prefer applicants who have completed formal training and can show readiness through certification or competency-based assessment.

DANB Radiation Health and Safety Exam

The DANB Radiation Health and Safety exam, often called the DANB RHS exam, is a focused certification exam related to dental radiography. For students pursuing entry-level dental assisting employment in Ohio, this is one of the most relevant certification opportunities because many dental assisting roles involve or prefer preparation for dental x-ray responsibilities.

The DANB RHS exam helps students demonstrate knowledge of radiation health, radiation safety, and dental imaging concepts. This can strengthen a student’s employment readiness, especially for dental offices that value applicants who are prepared to move toward radiography-related duties.

Why DANB RHS Matters for Employment

Ohio does not require one single statewide license or certification for every entry-level dental assistant role. Employer expectations vary. Some dental offices hire entry-level dental assistants and provide additional on-the-job training. Other employers prefer candidates who have completed formal training and can show readiness through certification or competency-based assessment.

Because dental x-rays are a common part of dental office practice, DANB RHS preparation can be especially useful. It gives students a focused way to show that they have studied the safety and technical concepts connected to dental radiography.

Dental Assistant Licensing in Ohio

Ohio does not license dental assistants as one general professional category. This means there is not one single Ohio dental assistant license required for all entry-level dental assisting positions.

However, Ohio does regulate what dental assistants and other qualified personnel may do under the supervision of a licensed dentist. Requirements depend on the duties assigned in the dental office. Some duties require specific training, certification, registration, or authorization.

For students, the most important point is this: basic entry-level dental assisting and dental x-ray duties are not the same. A student may be hired for an entry-level dental assisting role, but that does not automatically authorize the student to take dental x-rays.

Ohio Dental X-Ray Requirements

Students should understand that the DANB RHS exam is not the same as the Ohio Dental X-Ray Machine Operator certificate.

Dental assistants who take dental x-rays in Ohio must meet Ohio State Dental Board requirements and obtain the appropriate Ohio Dental X-Ray Machine Operator certificate. Students who intend to perform dental radiography duties in Ohio must follow the Ohio State Dental Board process before taking x-rays.

DANB RHS helps validate radiography-related knowledge.

The Ohio Dental X-Ray Machine Operator certificate is the state authorization required for taking dental x-rays in Ohio.

Students should confirm current requirements directly with the Ohio State Dental Board.

Relationship to NWCA Dental Assisting Clinical Certification

Some students may also pursue the NWCA Dental Assisting Clinical Certification. The NWCA certification can help validate broader dental assisting competencies, including knowledge related to dental procedures, infection control, patient records, dental materials, dental specialties, ethics and law, emergency care, and radiography concepts.

The NWCA certification may be useful as a supplemental credential. However, it should not be treated as a replacement for the DANB RHS exam when a student’s goal is to strengthen employment readiness related to dental x-ray knowledge and radiography responsibilities. It also does not replace the Ohio Dental X-Ray Machine Operator certificate.
