What is SI?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides regularly scheduled peer-facilitated study sessions for historically difficult courses at Cleveland State University. These sessions are free, out of class review sessions which improve the student academic performance by using effective and collaborative learning strategies.

Sessions are held by SI Leaders - students who have successfully completed the course in the previous semesters, are recommended by the professor, and trained by TASC (Tutoring Academic and Success Center). In the sessions, students have the opportunity to review the material covered in the lectures, take practice quizzes, collectively problem solve, apply strategies, and much more. SI sessions are voluntary; students can attend as needed/desired.

What is SLA?

Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) is similar to SI; however, there is an attendance policy. The professor establishes a "baseline" grade in which attendance is mandatory. For instance, the professor may make SLA mandatory for any student receiving below a 70% in the course. For those receiving a grade higher than the baseline, attendance at sessions is voluntary. When students register for the course, they are automatically registered for the SLA time.
