In Spring 2016, Twylla Stone, David Flanagan and Elissa Tennant all earned prestigious scholarships from local professional organizations related to their majors.


Twylla Stone

Twylla StoneTwylla Stone was awarded the Libby Sartain SHRM Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholarship is named for Libby Sartain, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, CCP who began her SHRM career as an undergraduate student chapter officer at Southern Methodist University. Ms. Sartain was active in SHRM throughout her undergraduate and graduate school and 30+ year career as an HR professional. 

Twylla served as the Cleveland State University SHRM Chapter President for the 2015-2016 academic year, worked full-time in an HR role at UTC Aerospace and credits Dr. Tracy Porter with encouraging her to apply, writing a recommendation letter and providing sound advice. Twylla took her first HR class at Tri-C and decided she wanted to work in the field. Soon after, she transferred to Cleveland State University as a Management Major. "The Labor Relations courses made CSU unique," she said. Twylla had an opportunity to apply that coursework while at UTC Aerospace working with unions and helping the HR team to prep for negotiations. 


Both David Flanagan and Elissa Tennant earned scholarships from the American Advertising Federation (AAF) Cleveland chapter.   

The AAF-Cleveland Education Foundation is a 501(c) 3 organization that provides annual scholarship and internship programs. Dedicated to the advancement of marketing communications students throughout Northeast Ohio, the foundation has given over $325,000 in scholarship dollars to deserving students. Both Students were honored at the AAF-CLE April 2016 Professional Development Luncheon. Both David and Elissa are marketing majors within the College of Business. David plans to graduate in May of 2017 and recently interned with SeaLand Chemical Company as a Marketing Intern. He originally landed an internship with SeaLand as a Supply Chain Intern but then made the switch to marketing after becoming involved in a market research project for the company. David credits Dr. Oya Tukel for help in finding an internship and Kim Ruggeri, Lecturer in the Marketing Department for helping him to find the scholarship. He has plans to continue with business-to-business marketing after graduation.

Elissa plans to graduate in December 2016, but has already landed a full-time position at HeyNow! Media as a Digital Strategist/Social Media Manager. Elissa won the CSU Senior Excellence in Marketing Award and currently specializes in creating digital and social media content for clients, providing strategy, reviewing analytics and optimizing campaigns.
