A Center for 21st Century Health Professions
- As a Center of Excellence in health professions, CSU has an extensive list of programs focused on providing a highly qualified workforce to Northeast Ohio's largest industry - health care. In particular, CSU's schools of Health Sciences and Nursing are focused on preparing students for dynamic careers in health care.
- CSU has the largest number of academic health profession programs in the region, offering bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in fields such as: biology, biomedical training, health sciences, speech and hearing, psychology, aging, pre-dentistry, pre-medicine, pharmacy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assisting and pre-podiatry. CSU is the only university in the region that offers programs for occupational therapy and physician's assisting.
- CSU has recently partnered with the medical school, NEOMED, to develop a medical school track through CSU that will produce primary care physicians trained specifically for urban communities. The program is one of the first of its kind in the nation.
- CSU's School of Nursing offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs, with specialties including forensic nursing, clinical nurse leader, nursing and education. A Ph.D in nursing is offered to increase the number of faculty among a national shortage of nursing professors.
- The CSU Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease is a nationally recognized research center that includes 11 fully funded researchers developing ground-breaking treatments for cardiovascular disease, strokes, arthritis and cancer.
- CSU is currently conducting more than 30 biological and chemical health-related research projects, many of which are funded through the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH this year has granted CSU researchers nearly $5 million for various research projects. More than two dozen other health-related research projects are also in progress at CSU.
- CSU offers a variety of 4+1 health care programs that allow a bachelor's and master's degree to be obtained in five years, instead of six. CSU also offers certificates in biotechnology; forensic chemistry; gerontological studies; and culture communication and health.
- Pass rates for certification exams by CSU health profession graduates are significantly above national averages. Typically more than 90 percent of CSU students pass their examinations.
- CSU's health professions are supported throughout the University with programs such as health law, health care administration, biomedical engineering, social work, bioethics, public health and a master's in health care administration.
- CSU maintains an extensive number of partner organizations throughout the community, including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, St. Vincent Charity Hospital, MetroHealth Medical Center, the Veterans Administration and other public and private centers and health care facilities.
- CSU actively works to increase the diversity of its health care students through various open-access policies, evening classes, online education and other means. CSU's health profession students are required to train in underserved urban health care facilities throughout the community.
