Protect Your Computer

Protecting your computer requires constant attention.  It is not something you do once and then put it out of your mind.  The best way you can protect your computer is to keep your PC patched, to have an up-to-date virus scanner running, and to practice “safe computing.”  This last truism varies with the current threat of the day so that what was once safe computing may no longer be safe.  For example, Web sites did not always pose a threat, but hackers are now writing code to infect unpatched machines that visit their sites.

Here are some thoughts on how to protect your computer from infection:

  • Patch your computer
  • Use anti-virus software
  • ‘Safe’ email attachments
  • Personal firewall settings
  • Create better, more secure passwords
  • Prevent spam
  • Remove spyware and adware
