Why Study English at CSU?

The Department of English at Cleveland State University is committed to Engaged Learning inside and out of the classroom. During the course of your studies in English at Cleveland State, you will benefit from small classes taught by our outstanding faculty who will guide you through our programs. 

The English Department at CSU offers a wide variety of courses with emphasis in areas ranging from poetry to literary analysis to British and American literature and everything in between. Our undergraduate students may earn a BA with concentrations in Creative Writing, Literature, Secondary Teaching or Honors. Undergraduates can also minor in English to supplement studies in other fields. Additionally, our undergraduate degree in English serves as an excellent foundation for a professional degree in many fields, including communications, law, medicine, and business administration.

Graduate students interested in research, literary analysis, and composition can earn a Master of Arts in English.  Graduate students wishing to pursue professional work in Fiction, Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction. Playwriting, or Literary Translation can earn a Master or Fine Arts in Creative Writing through the Northeast Ohio Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (NEOMFA) consortium.

Learning Opportunities Outside the Classroom

Beyond the classroom, the Department of English sponsors and supports many student organizations and student-run events that offer enriching hands-on opportunities to participate in the editorial process. Student organizations and publications at Cleveland State include:

Whiskey Island (creative writing magazine)
The Cauldron (newspaper)
Vindicator (monthly, multicultural arts magazine)

Additionally, the CSU Poetry Center holds The Lighthouse Reading series that features award-winning poets. The NEOMFA hosts the Visiting Writers Series that brings creative writers in fiction, creative non-fiction, playwriting, and poetry to NEOMFA campuses.
