CSU Student of Distinction: Tiffany Draft
Although Commencement has passed, CSU continues to celebrate graduating students who have overcome obstacles, made significant achievements or are fulfilling Cleveland State University’s mission in or outside the classroom.
Today, we celebrate Tiffany Draft, who earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, with dual licensure in primary education and special education, along with a TESOL endorsement.
CSU: Have you had any significant internships/co-ops/careers while at CSU?
TD: I had the incredible opportunity to participate in The Cleveland Fellowship (CTF), a partnership between the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Cleveland State University. Through this experience, I gained valuable hands-on teaching experience in an urban school district while also participating in ongoing professional development throughout my internship and student teaching.
As part of this partnership, I was placed at Oliver H. Perry Elementary School under the guidance of two exceptional mentors. During this time, I developed the skills needed to support diverse learners and gained a deeper understanding of how special education connects to the general education classroom. I also strengthened my ability to differentiate instruction and lead effective small-group instruction, adapting lessons to meet students’ varying academic and behavioral needs. This experience has been invaluable, and I will carry the knowledge and skills I’ve gained throughout my career.
CSU: How would you describe the connections you have made with the faculty and staff at CSU?
TD: I have built meaningful and lasting connections with faculty and staff at Cleveland State University, particularly within the Office of Field Services (within the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education). Throughout my graduate program, Anne Price, Aimee Furio, and Kristina Milia have played a significant role in my growth as an educator. They were always available to answer questions, provide encouragement, and support me along the way. My field supervisor, Kristina Milia, has been an invaluable mentor, and I look forward to continuing that relationship beyond graduation and into my professional career.
CSU: How has Cleveland State inspired you for your future?
TD: I began my graduate program in Spring 2024, not knowing exactly what to expect, but one consistent theme throughout my coursework has been the importance of maintaining a growth mindset. Cleveland State University has inspired me to adopt and carry this mindset into my future. I now view challenges as opportunities for growth and embrace the learning process. My goal is to instill this same mindset in my future students, so they feel confident, resilient, and motivated to learn.
CSU: How do you think you have fulfilled the CSU’s mission?
TD: I believe I have fulfilled CSU’s mission by applying what I’ve learned to serve my students and uplift my community, family, and peers. Through my work in education, I strive to create meaningful opportunities for growth not only for myself but also for those around me. I am committed to making a lasting impact in education and to serving Cleveland and surrounding communities through teaching, leadership, and lifelong learning.
CSU: Do you have a career lined up, and how has CSU been instrumental in that process?
TD: I accepted a position as an Intervention Specialist with Mayfield City School District. CSU has been instrumental in preparing me for this role. Through programs like DREAM and my student teaching experiences, I have developed the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to begin my career as an educator. CSU has truly prepared me to enter the field as a strong and capable professional.
Congratulations, Tiffany!
