Cleveland State University Continues to Climb in Latest Rankings

Cleveland State University continues to rise in the latest Washington Monthly rankings.
The publication ranks four-year schools — including national universities, liberal arts colleges, baccalaureate colleges and master’s universities — based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research and service.
“About a couple of decades ago, Washington Monthly developed and began publishing their ranking of universities with metrics that, I believe, are more true measures of the purpose and impact of higher education,” said dean and professor in the Washkewicz College of Engineering Richard Schoephoerster.
“That includes social mobility, research with impact on the community, and service to the community the university serves.”
In the most recent rankings in 2024, CSU’s overall ranking by Washington Monthly was second only to Ohio State’s overall ranking compared with all public colleges and universities in Ohio.
Additionally, CSU ranked:
- #2 in social mobility (behind only The Ohio State)
- #3 in service among Ohio publics
- #6 in research among Ohio publics
“We should be very proud of this ranking,” said Schoephoerster. “The metrics Washington Monthly uses are totally aligned with the Cleveland State United plan. As we continue to implement that plan and improve our social mobility impact and our research impact and service to the community, our ranking in the Washington Monthly should only increase.”
