YULANDA L. MCCARTY-HARRIS

Yulanda L. McCarty-Harris, J.D, is a Senior Certified Affirmative Action Professional (Sr. CAPP), and currently serves as the Director of the Office for Institutional Equity at Cleveland State University and is also CSU’s Title IX Coordinator.  In her role she is responsible for the overall legal compliance of the institution as it relates to equal opportunity, affirmative action, as well as gender-based sexual discrimination claims.

She graduated from Southern Methodist University School of Law in Dallas, Texas, and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in journalism. As a senior administrator for CSU, her responsibility is to ensure that the university provides equality of opportunity, equal employment and non-discrimination in hiring, promotion and placement of employees and responsible for compliance and training throughout the campus community to faculty, staff and students.   

Ms. McCarty-Harris was recently recognized in February 2015 as one of CSU’s Women of Distinction - “Women Keeping CSU Strong for Fifty Years” - in celebration of Women’s History Month and is also a recent graduate of CSU’s Leadership Excellence Institute.   In 2013, she was a graduate of the Ohio State Bar Association Leadership Academy, which identifies and trains lawyers for future opportunities for leadership in the Association, the profession and in the community. The Academy also serves to nurture lawyers for effective leadership with respect to ethical, professional and community service issues. 

She has received numerous awards and has also been appointed to many non-profit boards, including her most recent appointment as Membership Chair for the American Association for Access, Equity and Diversity (AAAED) and speaks frequently at events on the issues of Title IX, equity, race relations and diversity.

As a mother of two sons, she spends time volunteering at her sons’ schools and at church activities, and is a two-term President for the Youngstown Chapter of Jack and Jill, Inc. (a non-profit mothers’ organization focused on cultural and leadership development of their children)..

Ms. McCarty-Harris resides in Boardman and is married to John D. Harris, Jr., a sports journalist at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. They share three children – Courtney-Rose Dantus (Adam), Myles, and Langston.
