Patrick A. Sweeney’s career in public service spans six decades; from the time he read water meters for the City of Cleveland to his current position as Assistant to the Vice President of Governmental Relations at Cleveland State University. During that period, Mr. Sweeney has been a significant leader in many areas of public policy impacting Ohio.
Following a thirty-two year career in the Ohio Legislature, Mr. Sweeney took on a more significant role at CSU, not only continuing his position o the faculty, but also as the federal lobbyist. After his retirement, he has continued his 40 year relationship with CSU in his current position.
Mr. Sweeney is also President of PASCo Consultants, a public policy advocacy group, as well as Director of The Ohio Institute of Public Service.
His long career in both the House and Senate has been highlighted by roles as Majority Whip, Asst. Majority Leader and Minority Leader ( a position he would not wish on his worst enemy). He has been a delegate or alternate to several Democratic National Conventions; he was an advance man for Vice President Hubert Humphrey, member o the Jimmy Carter finance council and Ohio chairman of the presidential campaign of Al Gore.
He was the Chairman of The Legislative Budget Committee and Chairman of The House Finance and Appropriations Committee. He served on The Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, The Ohio Controlling Board, The Development Finance Board, The Legislative Service Commission and The Ohio Arts Council.
His involvement in our state and community has left many substantive footprints in policy, programs and projects. His passion, imagination and curiosity for government and public policy has led to his continued involvement in many significant activities; he was a founding trustee of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a member of The Civic Dome Committee (as him where the dome is?), a member of The Trustees of Columbia College Chicago and the alumni board of Harvard’s JFK School.
Patrick is a veteran of The United States Air Force. He holds a Master of Public Administration from The Kennedy School at Harvard University and an honorary Doctor of Law from Cleveland State University.
The University has been very good and productive for Patrick; he met young Emily Mirsky in the publication department, recruited her for his campaign, fell in love and married her 25 years ago. She graduated from Cleveland Marshall Law School and served as an Assistant United States Attorney until President Clinton appointed her to be The United States Attorney for The Northern District of Ohio. CSU and its Law School continues to play a role in their lives. Their only child, Margaret Anne is currently a third year student there after her graduation from Miami University.
