Undergraduate Studies and Academic Programs is here to help students achieve academic success at Cleveland State University. We are comprised of several units that are responsible for coordinating undergraduate student activities and programming inside and outside of the classroom. Listed below are highlights from each of our areas:

(Alphabetical Order)

Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE)
  • In the 2017-18 academic year, over 350 individual faculty members attended CFE offerings. 
  • The Center for Faculty Excellence provides nearly 50 unique common hour workshops every year for faculty on a variety of topics areas, including new technology, pedagogy, and student success.
College Credit Plus (CCP)
  • The CSU College Credit Plus (CCP) Program enrolls high school students both at main campus and on-site at various high schools 
  • The CCP Program Coordinator, Tonisha Glover, enjoys the opportunity to work with high school students, especially those who attend her alma mater John Hay!
Exploratory Advising
  • The Exploratory Advising Office assists who are searching for an appropriate major or are working to meet the requirements of their chosen major
  • Exploratory advisors use a variety of resources and assessment to help students make the best decision about their academic major
Extended Campuses & Partnerships
  • 10 degree programs, 5 at each campus, representing 3 CSU Colleges: Business, Science & Health Professions, & Urban Affairs
  • 404 actively enrolled partnership students, attending both on-site and online courses
  • 13 on-site CSU courses, with over 160 on-site seats filled each week
First Year Advising
  • First Year Advising has been in existence at CSU since Fall semester 2012!
  • The First Year Advising Office advises and supports the majority of incoming freshman students, from all colleges and majors, who have earned less than 24 credit hours from all colleges and majors
  • Each of the First Year Advising staff has a different undergraduate degree!
First Year Experience
  • Over a 1,100 first-year students attended a First Year Experience a sponsored program in the Fall 2018 semester
  • Our FYE Peer Mentors coordinated 150 out-of-class experiences for our first-year students to help them connect to CSU and the city of Cleveland in the Fall 2018 semester. 
General Education
  • CSU's General Education program includes nearly 600 courses from across 9 colleges and more than 50 departments and programs.
  • Distinctive and popular General Education offerings include -  MUS 161: Roots of Rock and Soul (Arts and Humanities), ANT 275: Ancient Mysteries (Social Science and AALAME) and PHY 101, 102, and 103: The Flying Circus of Physics (Natural Science with a lab).
KeyBank Scholars Program
  • The KeyBank Scholars Program supports all CSU undergraduate students who graduated from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD). On average, 675 CMSD graduates are enrolled at CSU.
  • The program offers 20 – 25 events per year, targeting academic, professional, social and cultural development. 
  • New first-year students in the program have an opportunity to participate in the Summer Transition Enrichment Program (STEP) and earn a book scholarship. 41% of first year KeyBank Scholars participate in STEP. 
(Re)Connect to College
  • The (Re)Connect to College Program at CSU, which assists comebackers in completing their undergraduate degrees, to date has helped 34 earn their degree.
  • The (Re)Connect to College Program at CSU is one of only four institutions in the country to be awarded a second round of funding from APLU (Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities).
Student Success Programs
  • Nearly 100,000 appointments are scheduled by undergraduate students within Starfish annually. 
  • More than 2,000 students used MyMajors in the first year of being released.
Transfer Center
  • For the 2011-2012 cohort of first-time students in Ohio, CSU ranked second in the state for the number of students (846) who transferred to a four-year institution and completed their degree.
  • The Zeta Upsilon Chapter of Tau Sigma National Honor Society was the only university in Ohio to attend the 2018 national conference in Orlando, FL
TRIO
  • Cleveland State University is the 8th largest Program in the nation, serving 537 students since 1970.

  • Recent studies of Student Support Services found that program participation resulted in statistically significant higher rates of student retention (92%) and graduation (64%) than their peers.

Tutoring and Academic Success Center (TASC)
  • Course pass rates were observed to be 6% higher for those who sought tutoring vs. those who did not in courses where tutoring was offered.
  • Success Coaching sessions increased in number by 61% when compared to AY 2016-17.
  • Supplemental Instruction (SI) supported 54 different BIO, CHM, PHY, and PSY courses.
  • Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) supported 40 English 101 sections.
Undergraduate Inclusive Excellence Coaching
  • Work closely with 200 assigned students of various backgrounds and academic disciplines
  • 4 years! We uniquely work side-by-side with all assigned 200 students from their first day to their graduating day
  • We’re a family of four dynamic coaches from diverse backgrounds within advising, admissions and undergraduate studies providing holistic support. 
Writing Center & Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) 
  • The Writing Center averages almost 4,000 tutorials a semester.
  • Some of the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) website resources pages receive almost 1,000 hits a month.
