Step-By-Step Instruction Guide To Applying Filters When Searching For Students In Starfish: FILTERING (PDF Version)

STARFISH FILTERS

Starfish allows faculty and staff to find students that meet certain criteria. Oftentimes, users have the ability to download this list in an EXCEL file or take action from this list within Starfish (outreach, intervention strategies, etc.).

FILTERING BY ATTRIBUTES

In Starfish, each student's folder displays attributes, or data points, on the Overview tab. These attributes can be filtered on, so you can easily find students that fit the criteria of any one of those data points. Check out this Filtering by Attributes guide!
*Please note that you may not have access to this due to limitations placed on your role.

GUIDELINES AND BEST PRACTICES FOR FILTERING

Filtering in Starfish uses AND when constructing SQL statements, which means that you will only be shown students that meet ALL the criteria you have selected in your filtering options. For example, if you would like pull a list of Dance Majors and Minors, you would need to create two lists: (1) Dance Majors Only, (2) Dance Minors Only. If you attempted to use the Dance Major filter AND the Dance Minor filter together, you would only see students that have a Dance Major AND a Dance Minor.

Also, a filter will remain in place until you clear it, even if you log out and log back in again.

Avoid enter in a TERM value when filtering by attributes. Values of No Term or All should be used.

As with any filtering in Starfish- attribute filters will only return students for whom you have permission to view.

*Please note: If you are are an employee of the university and would like more data on students for reporting purposes, you may benefit from having access to the 'Student Data Lanyard'. For access and questions, contact Heike Heinrich at h.heinrich@csuohio.edu.
