Cleveland

Cleveland is a small city packed full of things to do; there is bound to be something for everyone!

*Potential group outings include Blossom Music Center, the Great Lakes Science Museum, the Natural History Museum (and Mueller Observatory), NASA Glenn, the Star-Spangled Spectacular with the Cleveland Orchestra, a trip to the Liquid Crystal Institute at Kent State, and a trip to the Biomedical Engineering Department of the Cleveland Clinic/Lerner Research Institute (THESE ARE TENTATIVE).


Museums

  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: This world-famous museum features exhibits chronicling the evolution of the rock genre as well as featured exhibits about the stars who dominated it. Exhibits are rotated often so there is always something new to see. It is open late on Wednesdays and offers a student discount as well as occasional free-admission days.

  • Great Lakes Science Center: Located next to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this museum features three floors of interactive STEM-themed exhibits as well as an Omnimax Theater and a featured Traveling Exhibit. Student discounts are offered.

  • University Circle: University Circle is located approximately 15 minutes from the Cleveland State campus and features a wide array of museums and gardens; including the Cleveland Natural History Museum (including a traveling exhibit, the Shafran Planetarium, and the Mueller Observatory; student discounts available), the Cleveland Museum of Art (this award-winning museum is free! Special traveling exhibits are available for a fee), the Cleveland Botanical Gardens (featuring two indoor gardens, Rainforest of Costa Rica and Deserts of Madagascar, and a series of outdoor gardens), and many others.

Food Scene

  • West Side Market: The West Side Market is Cleveland’s oldest publically owned market and is home to over 100 vendors that offer a variety of fresh foods and ready-to-eat booths from all over the world.

  • Coventry Village: Located in Cleveland Heights (approximately 20 minutes from Campus), Coventry Village is Cleveland’s art district and is home to many unique restaurants and stores including Tommy’s (famous for its vegan options), Big Fun (retro and novelty toys and games!), Max Backs (used books), and many more.

  • The Arcade: Located on Public Square in Downtown Cleveland, the Arcade in Cleveland is home to a variety of restaurants including Barrio, Jack Flaps, The Chocolate Bar, and many more.

  • Little Italy: Historic Little Italy, located near University Circle, is home to a variety of family own restaurants and bakeries, many of which are very popular amongst Clevelanders, so you might need a reservation, but it is well worth the food and atmosphere.

Music

  • The Cleveland Orchestra: Cleveland’s very own award-winning, a world-class orchestra plays concerts all year round at two venues. Blossom Music Center is an outdoor amphitheater that is very popular during the summer (it also features concerts by other artists). Severance Hall is an indoor concert hall, which also features other local performances. Severance Hall offers free tours to the public on Sunday afternoons.

  • The Quicken Loans Arena and The Wolstein Center: These two venues feature larger-scale events and concerts ranging across many interests and music genres. The Quicken Loans arena is the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Wolstein Center is owned by Cleveland State.

Theater

  • Playhouse Square: Cleveland’s own Playhouse Square was awarded the 2015 Regional Theater Tony Award, and lives up to it. This theater district is the largest outside of Broadway in New York City. It features local productions, productions by Cleveland State’s own theater department, and touring Broadway Shows.

  • The Cleveland Public Theater:  Cleveland Public Theater focuses on local productions and artists, and operates almost entirely off of volunteer work. It features significantly smaller theaters than Playhouse Square, so all seats are good seats.

Metroparks

  • Cuyahoga Valley National Park: This park runs from the Cleveland area all the way down to Akron and includes several Visitor Centers, many outdoor foot and bike trails, the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail, and scenic train rides through the park. The Park plans public events throughout the year with admission prices ranging from free to $90+, so check the calendar often!

  • The Cleveland Zoo: The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is one of the many parks linked with the extensive Cleveland Metroparks System. Alongside the outdoor zoo, there is the indoor Rainforest Exhibit, the Primates, Cats & Aquatics House, and the Circle of Wildlife Carousel.
