Athletics

As we finalize plans for our return to campus we encourage you to check back here for the latest updates

Introduction:

The Department of Athletics Resocialization Plan has been developed to safely and responsibly resume varsity athletics operations on campus while continuing to provide student-athletes with a transformational experience. The overarching goal of CSU’s Athletics Resocialization Plan is to minimize the risk of transmission of COVID-19 on CSU’s campus, maintain a healthy environment for student-athletes, coaches and staff, and to gradually and safely return to varsity athletics as prudent within existing guidelines offered by the CDC, State of Ohio, NCAA, and Horizon League, as well as allow staff to be responsive to any future changes in local circumstances.  Escalation of teams through return phases outlined in the plan will be dependent on approval from CSU administration, and performed in consultation with Cleveland Clinic sports medicine partners.

Return Phases:

Teams will report on various starting dates, beginning with fall team sports (cross country, volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s soccer) on July 15, and progress through each phase in up to two-week increments. An active positive COVID-19 case would pause activity by that particular sport within the current phase until appropriate isolation, contact-tracing, symptom monitoring and cleaning measures are followed and a return to participation is approved by the appropriate parties.

Phase I (pre-return): Current through July 15

Activities include: Facilities cleaning & preparation; sports medicine facilities preparation; social contract acknowledgements for student-athletes, coaches and staff; finalization of housekeeping protocols and schedule; finalization of testing, tracing and quarantine protocols; education of teams on expectations, symptom monitoring, and procedures for possible future COVID-19 cases.

Student-athlete footprint: Off-site pre-participation screening physicals for local student-athletes; no on-campus access.

Phase II (early-return): July 15 through August 24

Activities include: Expanded pre-participation screening physicals for student-athletes; Return of sport administrators, coaches, limited support staff; Mask wearing at all times by students, coaches, and staff (with exception of student-athletes in an active workout activity); active self-assessment and in-person health screening when entering athletics facilities and prior to starting daily workout sessions; regular disinfecting of spaces (weight rooms, locker rooms, etc.); move-in to residence halls and off-campus housing.

Student-athlete footprint: Small-group voluntary strength and conditioning workouts under supervision of strength coaches and sports medicine staff; remote/online team meetings; closed locker rooms; appointment times/reduced capacities for sports medicine areas and other student-athlete services; no travel.

Phase III (main-return): August 24 through competition season (dates vary)

Activities include: Phases I & II; additional support staff permitted on-campus; enhanced cleaning of shared practice equipment; essential travel only (practices); limited recruiting activities (depending on NCAA policies).

Student-athlete footprint: small-group skill instruction permitted (no contact);  locker rooms open; team meetings continue remotely; any in-person activity done following physical distancing protocols.

Phase IV (post-return): Dates Vary by Sport
(minimum of two weeks in Phase III for contact sports and one week in Phase III for non-contact sports)

Activities include: limited travel (reduced/minimal overnight/hotel trips and/or air travel for competition whenever possible); recruiting travel permitted by coaches (must wear masks).

Student-athlete footprint: Phases I-III plus full contact practices and competition (only with approval by appropriate CSU administration and sports medicine staff); in-person team meetings permitted (with masks and physical distancing).
