Bulk Mailing

USPS BULK MAIL CLASSIFICATIONS:

First Class Mail – requires a minimum of 500 uniform mail pieces. Postage is indicated in the form of a “First Class Mail” indicia printed in place of metered or stamp postage.

Marketing Mail - (formerly known as STANDARD MAIL) – includes NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION accounts for nonprofit organizations such as Cleveland State University. This category requires a minimum of 200 uniform mail pieces. These can be letters or large Flat envelopes, all of which must be identical in weight, dimensions, and content. These mail pieces must be sorted in Zip Code order and separated into trays or sacks according to Zip Codes ranges that represent applicable postage prices. Specifically, items to Zip Codes ranging from 440XX-449XX are charged a lower postage rate than other destination Zip Codes.

PREPARATION OF BULK MAILINGS

First Class Mail bulk mailings of 500 or more uniform letter-mail pieces with the appropriate First Class Mail indicia in place of metered or stamped postage do not need to be sorted in Zip Code order.

Nonprofit Organization/Marketing Mail bulk mailings (200 or more uniform pieces) must be sorted in Zip Code order, and separated into bundles or lots according to the USPS sortation centers where their applicable Zip Code ranges are processed. Zip Codes ranging from 440XX-449XX are distributed throughout Northeast Ohio and are sorted in Cleveland. These involve the least amount of transportation and processing by the USPS and are calculated at the lowest Nonprofit Organization/Marketing Mail postage rates for the greatest savings in postage.

Mailpieces addressed to all other Zip Codes are shipped to a USPS processing hub in Pittsburgh, PA, for further sortation and distribution, and should be separated from mail in the 440XX-449XX range. These miscellaneous mail pieces should also be sorted by Zip Code order so that the CSU Mail Dept. can perform any additional sortation as appropriate. Because the USPS has automated much of its mail-processing, no additional separation needs to be done by CSU departments generating bulk mailings. In particular, it is not necessary to separate the mail pieces into 5-digit bundles; as long as the mailings are separated into Zip Code order and the two applicable ranges, the CSU Mail Dept. will perform any additional sortation.
