Office of the President Monthly Update

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff and Friends:

I have thoroughly enjoyed our first fall together (65 degrees and sunny on December 1 — amazing!). Over the past few weeks, I had the privilege of attending the 95th anniversary celebration for our Fenn Co-Op Program, meeting with students in the Ahuja College of Business to review their excellent One Thing Campaign suggestions and speaking to the Student Government Association Senate.

This busy semester will culminate with Fall Commencement on Sunday, December 16, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Wolstein Center. Congratulations to all of our graduates!

Our valedictorian is Rushabh Patel, who is graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from the College of Sciences and Health Professions and the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Honors College.

To each and every student who will graduate this month, we salute you. May the hard work you put into earning your degree bring much success and happiness, wherever the future may lead.

Public Power

At the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities Council of Presidents meeting last month in New Orleans, we announced the new “Powered by Publics: Scaling Student Success” initiative.

As part of this effort, CSU and more than 125 other schools are working together in clusters to increase degree attainment and close the achievement gap. CSU is a member of the “Urban Cluster” along with 10 other institutions, including Virginia Commonwealth University, Florida International University and Wayne State University.

We are proud to participate in this national initiative, as it will augment the exciting work that we are already doing to accelerate progression to graduation (e.g. multi-term registration, demand-driven enrollment and purposeful advising).

Please join me in welcoming Jeanell and Jim to the University!

Is There a Future Doctor in the House?

You bet — when it comes to our students. CSU acceptance rates into dental school, medical school and physical therapy school are well ahead of national averages.

CSU Women's Soccer Team

Wide World of Sports

Cleveland has been chosen to host the NBA All-Star Game in 2022, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the league. The excitement surrounding the main event will extend to our campus, where the Wolstein Center will host several related activities, including the NBA All-Star Practice and the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.

In the meantime, be sure to catch our men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams in action at home this month. Get to a game and #UniteForGreenAndWhite!

Our fall sports teams gave our fans plenty to cheer about, too. It was an especially memorable autumn for the women’s soccer team (pictured above), which reached the Horizon League championship for the first time in the history of the program. Congratulations to Coach Dallas Boyer and his student-athletes on a record-setting run.

President's Holiday Reception

Happy Holidays!

I so enjoyed spending time with you celebrating the holiday season at our annual reception. Thanks to your generosity, we filled four huge boxes with gifts for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. If you still wish to make a donation to this worthy cause, you may do so through Wednesday, December 12, at the Student Center information desk.

From the Sands family to yours, all the best for a safe and joyous holiday!

Sincerely,

Harlan Sands signature
