Office of the President Monthly Update

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff and Friends:

“Forward Together” was our theme for Investiture — and the way our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends from near and far came together last month to celebrate this special occasion for Cleveland State University was moving and meaningful. For those of you who missed it, click here.

Our proud past is prologue to even better days to come for CSU. As we work together to advance our University, I look forward to collectively building upon our reputation and value as both an “anchor” institution to our city and region, where 80 percent of our graduates stay in Northeast Ohio, and a “beacon” institution, where we draw talented new students, faculty and staff to CSU and Cleveland to take advantage of our unique Engaged Learning environment. Together, we will continue to dream big and aim high!

This past month, we witnessed two dreams come true with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for our School of Film & Media Arts and the dedication of the Dan T. Moore MakerSpace in the Washkewicz College of Engineering.

School of Film and Media Arts dedication

A standing-room-only crowd packed the top floor of the Idea Center at Playhouse Square on October 11 as we officially unveiled the School of Film & Media Arts. Click here for more details on this unique, state-of-the art facility that has already become a first choice destination for students and faculty alike.

Dan T. Moore MakerSpace dedication

On October 23 we dedicated the Dan T. Moore MakerSpace. Made possible by a generous gift from CSU Trustee Dan T. Moore, this 6,400-square-foot facility in Washkewicz Hall includes high-resolution 3D printers and scanners, computer-aided manufacturing equipment, digital fabrication tools, laser-cutting machines, and more. This transformative space will provide inspiration for current and future CSU students as they become leaders of tomorrow.

2018 Ohio Gubernatorial Debate

On October 8, we were proud to host Mike DeWine and Richard Cordray’s third and final Ohio gubernatorial debate at CSU.

Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Hall of Fame event

We ended October with the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law 2018 Hall of Fame ceremony, where 29 inductees were honored, and we celebrated Executive-in-Residence and alumnus Kelly Tompkins’ $750,000 gift to establish the P. Kelly Tompkins Leadership and Law Program.

Mayfield High School Visit

As I mentioned during our Investiture celebration, you will see me “front and center” in our continuing quest to promote the great experience a CSU education brings. Last month, I began a series of visits to area high schools, where I saw up close the incredible interest and excitement we are generating among local high school students. Applications at CSU are up — WAY up. Recently USA Today reported that CSU ranks No. 43 nationally and sixth in the Midwest in the rate of increase in freshman applications.

Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Hall of Fame event

And we all know that when students join us, they succeed. Just ask our graduating law students. Our College of Law once again had the highest first-time passage rate on the Ohio Bar Examination — 93 percent of our first-time test-takers passed the July 2018 exam, well above the Ohio law school average of 79 percent and well ahead of the percentages posted by other public and private law schools across the state.

What we achieve we do together. See you on campus!
