Office of the President Monthly Update

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff and Friends:

Last month I had the pleasure of addressing freshmen and new students at Magnus Fest. I challenged them to take responsibility for their future, to make the most of their time and to embrace the diversity of our campus community as they set out to write the next chapter in their lives.

As I reflect on my own personal journey, I am grateful for every friend and mentor who encouraged me and for every opportunity that presented itself along the winding path that ultimately led me here to Cleveland State University.

The beginning of a new academic year presents all of us with a blank page, full of possibilities. The next chapter in the history of CSU is ours to write, collectively. Through my conversations with many of you as well as with community stakeholders, key themes are beginning to emerge. These themes will inform a strategic vision to guide us into the future.

In the meantime, this is shaping up to be a memorable fall semester:

  • We welcomed a record-setting 1,900-plus freshmen and nearly 30 new faculty members to CSU.
  • They should have no trouble finding their way around campus, thanks to the eye-catching new signs and directional elements that we recently installed along the revamped InnerLink (which the rest of you probably will appreciate, too).
  • CSU has been selected to host the last of three Ohio gubernatorial debates — and the only debate in Northeast Ohio — between candidates Richard Cordray and Mike DeWine on Monday, October 8, at 7 p.m. in the Student Center's Glasscock Family Foundation Ballroom. Stay tuned for further details.
  • Next month, we also will dedicate two exciting new facilities: the School of Film & Media Arts on Thursday, October 11, and the Dan T. Moore Makerspace in the Washkewicz College of Engineering on Tuesday, October 23.

It was great to catch up with so many of you last week at the President’s Picnic. I hope we can keep the dialogue going. Please join me for my first Twitter chat at 2 p.m. this Wednesday, September 12. If you are not already following me on Twitter, my handle is @CSU_President. You may use #AskPresidentSands to submit questions about CSU in advance or during the chat. I look forward to the exchange!

Sincerely,
