Teaching Enhancement Award Program

The CSU Center for Faculty Development and Leadership (formerly CTE) sponsors the Teaching Enhancement Awards Program, designed to support student success and learning through course enhancement and instructional innovation at Cleveland State University. All full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members, as well as lecturers may apply. Preference will be given to those not previously funded by this program.

Request for Proposals due November 20th

The deadline for 2014/2015 is November 20, 2014 at 4 pm to the CFD&L office in MC 212. Decisions will be made by December 9, 2014; notices will be distributed immediately thereafter, and projects must be completed by the end of Spring Semester 2015 with a final report submitted by May 13, 2015. In addition, all award recipients would agree to participate in a panel presentation of their award and results on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 during the common hour at a workshop sponsored by CFD&L.  

Process: Proposals must focus on specific activities related to student engagement, instructional improvement and the enhancement of student learning outcomes. The CFD&L wishes to promote faculty innovation and creativity in teaching. Proposals that fund new technologies are encouraged, but innovative proposals for utilizing traditional technologies or methodologies are also welcome. A faculty review committee will evaluate proposals competitively, and we anticipate awarding two to three grants.

Submit a description of the project, project goals, assessment method(s) to be used, expected outcomes, detailed budget, and timeline to the Center for Faculty Development and Leadership by the deadline. The maximum proposal length is ten pages with normal font size and page formatting (including any attachments or appendices). Please provide five (5) paper copies of your proposal, including cover letter and statement of support for use by the faculty review committee. Budget: Individual grants may be for up to $5000. Funds may not be used as a substitute for ongoing budgeted items such as exit surveys or proficiency testing. No indirect costs are to be provided. Matching funds from colleges and/or departments are encouraged but not required. Funded items may include but are not limited to instructional materials; specialized instructional software or hardware; classroom demonstration materials; and travel to attend workshops or conferences on teaching. Funds may not be used for faculty course release time.

Please note that routine course revisions or simply placing course materials online will not qualify for support. The Center for eLearning is now administering all distance education activities and incentives; therefore, course development for distance delivery will NOT qualify for this program.

This is not a program to fund general student assistantships; the intent of the program is that you will personally be implementing some form of teaching enhancement. If you request funding for student help, please explain in specific terms what the students would do to help achieve your proposed goals, why the amount of time requested is appropriate, and where you got the wage figure you are using in the budget. If you do this, please note that you must include fringe benefits in your calculations; contact HR for assistance if needed. As a rule, proposals that simply request funds for student assistants, are less often accepted.

Approvals: Funds are intended to support individual projects that are consistent with departmental and College goals. In order to be considered, proposals must contain a statement from the individual's department chair or college Dean indicating support for the project and describing its relationship to department or College goals.
