In an effort to develop a future talent base for Pharmaceutical and related industries, Xellia partnered with Cleveland State University to host an Instructional Series during the 2018 Fall Semester related to Good Design Practices for cGMP Pharmaceutical Facilities. Joe Yurko, Associate Project Lead, is a Cleveland State University graduate and sits on the Industrial Advisory Committee in the Chemical and Biomedical Engineering Department. Joe worked closely with the student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) at the university to coordinate this event for a second year in a row. Joe, John Mylar a chemical engineering graduate from Oklahoma State University along with Daniel Heinrich, Stephanie McClure, John Juchnowski, Kruttika Patel, and Noura Awad who were recent chemical engineering graduates from CSU presented the series of lectures.
The lecture series covered various important topics for cGMP facilities including an overview of the pharmaceutical industry and cGMPs; legacy facility master planning; architectural designs; utility systems; high purity water systems; commissioning, qualification, and validations; process engineering; automation; sterile manufacturing; biotechnology facilties; codes and standards, containment technology; occupational health and safety; sustainability; QA/QC laboratories; and packaging and warehousing. Both a midterm and a final exam were given in a group participation environment on “Three Letter Acronyms.” Thirty students completed 8 out of the 12 hour sessions and received Xellia Certificates of completion. An awards ceremony was held on December 6th at Cleveland State.
