Deadline Information

The last day to apply for graduation and to have your name included in the Spring 2021 Commencement Program is Wednesday, March 17.

General Information

CSU will hold two commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 15, at Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland. Commencement will be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend the ceremonies in-person. To view the livestream, click here or visit the CSU Facebook page.

Morning and Afternoon Commencement Ceremonies
The morning commencement ceremony will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. All graduates, faculty and platform party guests must be present by 8 a.m. and remain in the stadium for the duration of the program. The morning ceremony will include the following Colleges:

  • College of Sciences and Health Professions
  • School of Nursing
  • College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences
  • Secretary Marcia Fudge as commencement speaker​​​​​​​, providing video-recorded address due to new, COVID-related travel guidance from the White House.

The afternoon commencement ceremony will be held from 1-3:30 p.m. All graduates, faculty and platform party guests must be present by Noon and remain in the stadium for the duration of the program. The afternoon ceremony will include the following Colleges:

  • Washkewicz College of Engineering
  • College of Education & Human Services
  • Monte Ahuja College of Business
  • Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs
  • Cleveland-Marshall College of Law
  • ​​​​​​​Secretary Marcia Fudge as commencement speaker​​​​​​​, ​​​​​​​providing video-recorded address due to new, COVID-related travel guidance from the White House.

Morning and afternoon commencement ceremonies will be held rain or shine.

Ticket Update​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

We are pleased to be able to celebrate the Class of 2021 with in-person commencement ceremonies. The health and safety of our graduates, their families and friends remains our top priority. As of April 27, each graduate will now receive four tickets to commencement: one ticket for themselves and three tickets for guests. Children 2 years and under do not require a ticket, but must be seated on a ticketed guest's lap during the ceremony.

Protocols for Commencement Day​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

​​​​​​​To ensure a safe event for graduates, guests and faculty/staff, we must all adhere to the policies set forth by Progressive Field. You and your guests must follow the required Commencement protocols listed below. 

Please read carefully:

Progressive Field enforces a no-bag policy for this event, except for the following bags that are permitted: small clutches, manufactured diaper bags and medical device bags.

  • Fanny packs, clutches and hip packs with a strap are permitted.
  • Clutches that measure more than 9” x 5” x 2” are NOT permitted.

Guests may bring cameras with them. However, camera equipment that includes tripods, selfie sticks, monopods, lenses larger than 100mm and camera bags are not permitted.

Arrive early to give youself ample time to check in at your designated college registration tables to pick up your name card and other materials prior to entering the ballpark. Check-in tables will be located at Gateway Plaza outside of Left Field Gate.

Guests are not required to check in but are encouraged to arrive early as seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

For the morning ceremony, doors open at 8 a.m. You and your guests are encouraged to arrive no later than 7:30 a.m. You are expected to be in assigned seats by 8:30 a.m.

For the afternoon ceremony, doors open at noon. You and your guests are encouraged to arrive no later than 11:30 a.m. You are expected to be in assigned seats by 12:30 p.m.

You must arrive at Progressive Field already dressed in your commencement regalia.

Emergency Procedures
In the event of an emergency which causes a delay of the ceremony or an evacuation of the ballpark, please direct your attention to the scoreboard and listen for announcements on the PA system. Staff and security will also provide direction.

You and your guests will only be able to enter Progressive Field through one entrance: Left Field Gate. Please arrive early and be prepared having followed all guidelines to ensure an efficient entrance into the ballpark.

There is absolutely no congregating permitted in the ballpark and Commencement ceremonies will adhere to very strict timelines. You and your guests should immediately exit the ballpark after the ceremony and gather with your party outside of the gates in the Gateway area. 

Facial Coverings/Masks
Masks must be worn at all times in Progressive Field. Acceptable masks include the following: double-layered cloth masks, surgical masks, dust masks and N95 masks without vents.

Food and Beverage
No food and beverage may be brought into Progressive Field, 
however, each guest can bring in one factory-sealed, standard size bottle of water.

You and your guests should wear appropriate footwear (flat, comfortable shoes). Please be advised that heels are strictly forbidden on Progressive Field’s warning track, meaning that graduates wearing heels will not be permitted to walk in the procession. Wedges are confirmed as acceptable shoes. If you have specific questions regarding acceptable footwear, please email

Gateway East Garage, which is located adjacent to Commencement check-in, will be open for CSU’s Commencement and will offer free parking. 

Additional parking lots located near Progressive Field may be found here. Additionally, City of Cleveland street parking is free and available on weekends.

Graduates who wish to park at CSU and walk to Commencement at Progressive Field: CSU Green and White spring parking permits have been extended through Sunday, May 16, 2021. Green and White permit holders can park in South Garage. Green permit holders can also park in West Garage.

Guests may park for free on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Platinum Parking Lot (Lot G49) located on the corner of Carnegie Avenue and East 9th Street (917 Carnegie Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44115), across from the BP gas station. There are 280 spots available for each ceremony.


  • All graduates will be assigned seating sections based on colleges.
  • Guest seating is general admission on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Seats at Progressive Field are secured by zip-ties into pre-arranged sections. Guests are strictly prohibited to tamper with zip-ties and must sit in seats as they are configured.
  • Staff and signage will direct graduates and guests to the appropriate seating areas.
  • Accessible seating is available and requests for accommodations will be granted.
    • ADA accessible seating is available. Wheelchair spaces are available throughout Progressive Field. All of these spaces have combination of companion seating adjacent to the wheelchair space. Wheelchairs are available at the entrance on a first-come, first-serve basis.
      Seats at the end of the row that do not have an armrest on the side nearest the steps provide easy access for those guests with mobility impairments.


  • You may claim up to four tickets — one for you and three additional tickets for a maximum of three guests. 
  • ​​​​​​​Children 2 years and under do not require a ticket, but must be seated on a ticketed guest's lap during the ceremony.
  • Mobile tickets will be issued in advance of the Commencement ceremonies.
  • You and your guests should be prepared with smartphones to display mobile tickets, which will be scanned by staff as you enter Left Field Gate.
  • Staff will be available on-site to assist with ticketing issues

Guests will be allowed to bring one travel-sized umbrella into the ballpark for personal use.


In order to be eligible to participate in the Spring Commencement Ceremony you must have an active graduation application on file for Spring 2021 Semester and be in good academic standing. If you have any questions regarding academic degree requirements, please consult with your academic advisor.

If you are an undergraduate student and will graduate with a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher, you are eligible to graduate with honors and will be awarded an honors medallion. The honors medallion identifies your scholastic distinction. Eligible students will be contacted to pick up their honors medallion in the near future.

· 4.00 - 3.80 Summa Cum Laude

· 3.79 - 3.60 Magna Cum Laude

· 3.59 - 3.30 Cum Laude


Academic Regalia will be available to purchase through the Viking Outfitters website and in-store in early April. Contact Viking Outfitters by email at or visit for any questions. Make sure to order by April 30 to guarantee arrival via Standard Ground if ordering for home delivery by May 14.

If graduates prefer, regalia can be purchased in-person at Viking Outfitters, located inside the Student Center on CSU’s campus. The store is open to the public for in-store purchases Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Viking Outfitters Special Hours for Commencement Weekend
Viking Outfitters will be open on Friday, May 14, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. to accommodate in-person order pick-ups or to assist with any regalia swaps.

The bookstore will reopen again on Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for additional order pick-ups or to assist with any regalia swaps.

Diploma Mailing

Following a final audit of your academic record and verification of the successful completion of all degree requirements, your diploma will be mailed to the address on file with the University approximately four to six weeks following Commencement in mid-May 2021.

2020 Graduates

We remain committed to celebrating your graduation with you in person. Unfortunately, due to strict Covid-19 protocols limiting attendance at Progressive Field, we are unable to accommodate the Class of 2020 at the Spring 2021 commencement ceremonies on May 15.
