Course Overview

Over 80 percent of military-connected pupils (or roughly 2,000,000 students) attend U.S. public schools. Virtually all school districts teach children connected to the military, in one way or another. With the adoption of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), military-connected students are now recognized as a distinct student group to be included as part of school accountability reporting each year.

When compared to their peers whose parents do not experience a deployment as a member of the Armed Services, military-connected students consistently underperform. “When the women and men in uniform answer the call of duty, their children are also impacted.” – Arne Duncan

It is critical that education practitioners understand the unique situation military-connected students experience in order to provide to these and all students with an equal and fair opportunity for success in school and life. This course is designed to establish a foundation from which teachers, school administrators, and school counselors can begin to understand and address the needs to military-connected students.
