‘Behind the Scenes’ with Paula Mason
We’re doing our best to keep you connected with all the people that make up the College of Education and Human Services. This time, we’re going “Behind the Scenes” with Paula Mason as she tells us about her department, her role at Cleveland State and the last concert she attended.
Official title and department at Cleveland State University: I’m the administrative coordinator for the Community Learning Center for Children and Youth (CLC). We’re in the Teacher Education department located in Julka Hall.
Briefly describe your position at CSU: I’m charged with pairing children from the community with CSU students to gain experience and earn field hours. Additionally, I manage the facility resources for CSU student use as well as faculty and staff.
Briefly describe your department: Our department serves children from the community in grades K-12. Our staff also includes a graduate assistant (Kenya Gest) and most recently a student worker (Lana Sims). Our office area is made up of educational resources and technology for use by CSU students, faculty and staff as well as parents and families.
One thing your department does that people are unfamiliar with: The CLC serves as a library of sorts in that we have many resources available like books, leveled books and a manipulatives room with many types of educational resources to facilitate a great learning environment.
Accomplishment you’re most proud of at CSU: Our department services children from the community from K-12. One day, I received a call from a parent whose 20-year-old son wanted to go to college, but hadn’t taken the ACT or SAT because they were in Job Corp. The CLC is here to help the community, so I made a few calls to individual tutors majoring in math and science. They worked with the young man and now he’s in college pursing his degree.
Favorite activity when you’re not at CSU: One of my favorite things to do is workout with my intense cycling class.
Last concert attended: It was a New Edition concert. I had front row tickets. It was great!
Favorite food: My favorite food is chicken.
Favorite vacation destination: Hawaii is my favorite place to vacation! That’s also where my nephew is stationed in the Army.
Best part about being at CSU: Being able to help children. It’s also great being surrounded by people who value education and continue to better themselves.
