an interdisciplinary approach to the study of women's experiences

Women's Studies students go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, in order to analyze the role of gender in shaping human societies of the past and the present, as well as to understand the crucial issues in society and in their own lives.

Courses are offered by 11 departments and three colleges and enable students to:

  • discover and communicate new knowledge about women,
  • reinterpret existing knowledge, and
  • synthesize and integrate this information into their general learning experience

Women's Studies Major
Open to any undergraduate student! To earn a Women's Studies Major, students must take a minimum of 38 semester hours in Women's Studies courses, including: the Introduction to Women's Studies (WST 151), Practicum in Women's Studies (WST 351), and the Advanced Seminar in Women's Studies (WST 495). At least 21 hours must be earned at the 300 level or above. Courses are to be distributed over 3 departments with at least six hours in the humanities, and six hours in the social sciences. Up to four hours of independent study (WST 496) may be included as part of the major, and only courses in which the grade of a "C" or better is earned are counted toward the fulfillment of the major. Students are encouraged to use this framework to develop a more specialized Women's Studies curriculum based upon their particular career interests. Declaration of major forms can be obtained at the Women's Comprehensive Program office - Main Classroom 142.

Women's Studies Minor
Students wishing to minor in Women's Studies must take a minimum of 16 semester hours in Women's Studies designated courses, of which eight credit hours must be earned at the 300 level or above. There are three distribution requirements: courses must be selected from at least three different departments; courses must include at least one course from the humanities and at least one course from the social sciences, and students must successfully complete the Advanced Seminar in Women's Studies. Declaration of minor forms are available in the Women's Comprehensive Program office - Main Classroom 142.
