Cleveland State University, an urban state-assisted institution, was established in 1964 by an emergency act of the Ohio General Assembly to satisfy an urgent need for higher education at all levels in Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. The purpose and goals of CSU have been refined over the years, but the University has retained a central commitment to provide educational opportunities to a primarily commuting student body. CSU opened its doors in the fall of 1965, acquiring the existing physical plant and faculty of Fenn College, with which the University was merged upon its establishment. This merger enabled CSU to begin with a core of respected faculty and programs as the basis for the development of additional undergraduate and graduate programs. Present enrollment exceeds 15,749 students of which 54% are females and 46% are males. The student body racial distribution is approximately 61% White, 17% Black, 3% Asian, 2% Hispanic, 0.3% Native Indian,4% Non-Resident Alien and 13% unspecified. The average age of CSU students is 28 years old. CSU offers bachelor's degrees in over 60 major fields. Undergraduate students purse these courses of instruction through one of the five undergraduate colleges: College of Arts and Sciences; James J. Nance College of Business Administration; Fenn College of Engineering; College of Education; and the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs. Other programs available to undergraduates include: First College, an independent liberal arts program; Black Studies, a selection of courses which explore the Black experience in America; and the Women's Comprehensive Program, which offers special programming and counseling as well as course work. Graduate work is offered through the College of Graduate Studies and the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Graduate enrollments continue to grow, and approximately 33% of the student body is enrolled in 48 master's degree programs, 2 advanced degrees in law, 2 post-master's Educational Specialist programs, and 15 doctoral degrees in business administration, clinical and analytical chemistry, regulatory biology, engineering, urban education, and urban studies. In addition to the seven colleges which comprise Cleveland State University, the Division of University Studies offers a number of academic and support services designed to specifically promote student retention and academic success. Its Office of Collegiate Studies provides developmental course work in English as a Second Language and tutoring for its developmental courses and University college courses. The division also provides student advising, counseling, services for students with disabilities and career services. The Continuing Education Division, located in the Joseph E. Cole Center, offers a variety of special non-credit learning opportunities. The CSU campus currently consists of 37 buildings on more than 80 acres located near downtown Cleveland. The building inventory includes Monte Ahuja Hall, home of the College of Business Administration and the Health Sciences Building which both opened in 1998. A new 83,000 square foot building to house the College of Urban Affairs is scheduled to open in November 2000. The city and its environment provide natural laboratories that enhance the academic preparation obtained through our degree programs. CSU's location also provides students with proximity to many cultural resources and institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History. Greater Cleveland is unusually rich in its ethnic and racial diversity. The University's high regard for the value of diversity is reflected in its commitment to provide quality educational opportunities for all citizens. Rev. May 2000 |
