Undergraduate Placement Testing - English

Each course of the three offered by the First-Year Writing Program is designed to meet the specific instructional needs of the students placing into that course. Students entering CSU without transfer credits in writing will move through the first-year writing sequence as indicated below. SAT scores are Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) test scores.

GPA Placement Guidelines: 

Cum GPA 3.49 and below Cum GPA 3.5 and above
take English 100 take English 101
then take English 102 then take English 102

SAT/ACT Placement Guidelines:

ACT 19 and lower
SAT (old) 460 and lower
SAT (new) 479 and lower
ACT 20-25
SAT (old) 470-580
SAT (new) 480-609
ACT 26 and higher
SAT (old) 590 and higher
SAT (new) 610 and higher
take English 100 take English 101  
then take English 102 then take English 102 take English 102

Placement Testing Guidelines:

If you do not have transfer credit, a high school GPA, SAT/ACT scores, or AP English credit, you must take a First-Year Writing Placement test. Normally, the test is only given on campus.
