JONATHAN POLLARDIn 1983, President Ronald Regan signed an agreement with Israel, America's ally, promising to give Israel all information dealing with its national security. In 1985 Jonathan Pollard, a civilian naval intelligence officer became aware of information concerning Iraqi and Syrian nuclear and biological weapons, information which would affect Israel's security. When Pollard asked why this information was not being sent to Israel, under the agreement, he was shrugged off and ignored. Because of the life treatening nature of this information, Pollard decided to pass this information on illegally to Israel. Jonathan Pollard was arrested and charged with passing classified information to a foreign government. He pleaded guilty and entered a plea bargain. Although the maximum sentence for his crime was five years, Jonathan Pollard was given life imprisonment in solitary confinement. Just before the sentencing, Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger gave a letter to the judge stating, "[It is] difficult to conceive of a greater harm to national security than that caused by... Pollard's treasonous behavior." Weinberger did this even though Pollard was never accused of treason. Why was Jonathan Pollard given such a harsh sentence for giving information to secure Israel, America's ally, when the U.S. government agreed to sharing information for security purposes? Compare Pollard's story to these: * In 1986, Richard Miller was convicted with giving classified information to the KGB, our enemy, during the Cold War. He received twenty years in prison and is now free. * In 1991, Albert Sombolay was convicted with spying for Iraq during the Gulf War. He received nineteen years in prison. * In 1993, Joseph Brown was convicted for giving classified information to a foreign government, the Philippines. This was the same crime as Pollard's. John Brown received five years and ten months in prison. Where are organizations like the ACLU and Amnesty Interantional, among other? It's time we stand up and speak out against this injustice. Jonathan Pollard deserves to be release for these reasons: 1. The information he gave to Israel, our ally, should have been given in first place. 2. His sentence is higher than any other person convicted of the same crime. 3. His punishment has been more severe than even those convicted of worse crimes.
