Avizur

by Eliahu Beitzouri (1922-1945)

interpreted from Hebrew, as printed in The Deed by
Gerold Frank

My son too will be like him
The sun of the mountains of Judea will tan his skin
And the wind of the seas will coarsen his skin
His eyes will glitter with the fire of freedom
As your eyes, Oh father

My son too will be like him
When he goes into battle my blood
will boil in his veins
And within him my mother's heart will flutter

When I saw my ancestors forgather in my dream
I knew then why I was so restless
When I saw my ancestors forgather in my dream
I knew: My son too will be like him
