for Social Work Students

The purposes of Phi Alpha Honor Society are to provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideals. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work.
NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP
An undergraduate student is eligible for membership after achieving the following requirements:
- Declared social work as a major
- Achieved sophomore status
- Completed 9 semester hours or
- 12 quarter hours of required social work courses
- Achieved an overall grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
- Achieved a 3.25 grade point average in required social work courses
A graduate student is eligible for membership after achieving the following requirements:
Completed one semester of course work Achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society Delta Zeta chapter was established at the Cleveland State University on 1993. During the past few years, it has become one of the most active chapters in the nation.
- Several members pursued graduate studies.
- Two members presented invitational papers at the World Association of Case Study Research Conference in Leysin , Switzerland and one of them won the best student paper award.
- One member was elected as a Board member of the Ohio chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
- Another member received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Federation for Community Planning.
- Forty members presented invitational papers at the State and National Professional Conferences.
Two members were involved in the making of a documentary film on TSUNAMI AFTERMATH
- One member received the Best Student of the Year Award for Outstanding Community Service from the OHIO CAMPUS COMPACT.
- One inductee's research paper was published as a chapter of a book.
- One member achieved the highest score in the entire country at the National Social Work Licensure Examination.
- All our members pass the Social Work Licensure Examination during the first attempt.
- The only student member of the VOLUNTEER OHIO board is one of our inductees.
- The former Secretary of our Honor Society was selected as the MISS WHEELCHAIR OHIO , and she came fourth in the national competition.
- Members hosted the Community Empowerment Seminar, Welfare Reform Forum, Curriculum Issues, and Neighborhood Fair.

SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM AT CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY
Social Work Students play an active role in numerous service projects, including the Community Service Initiative, a program that matches faculty, staff and student volunteers throughout the University with nonprofit human service agencies in Greater Cleveland. These community-based projects provide academic growth and personal development to students; develop life-long commitments to serving others; enhance the quality of life in the community; and exemplify the commitment of Cleveland State as a service-oriented institution.
