Personal Statement (Beth Cagan):
My research has been in the field of international social development. I am interested in the processes by which poor people around the world attempt to create social institutions and programs that better their lives. My particular focus is on egalitarian forms of social organization, especially those that are directed toward the full and equal participation of women. I have studied these in Central America and in other parts of the developing world.
My teaching interests are predominantly in the area of social welfare policy and programs. In addition, I teach a course on women and international social development, and a course on the women's movement, both offered in First College.
My community service also addresses issues of social inequality and grassroots efforts to promote social justice. I have been active in the movement to bring about a living wage ordinance for the City of Cleveland, and, currently, for Cuyahoga County. I am also a member of the Workers' Rights Board and serve on the Board of Trustees of the United Labor Agency and Citizen Action.
