To offer a training program for people who are interested in teaching group fitness at Cleveland State University.
The purpose of the FIT program is to teach participants the foundations of group fitness instruction and develop their presentation and leadership skills through practical experiences. This course is designed to prepare participants for a national certification exam, such as ACE, AFAA or ACSM.
The F.I.T. Program is an 8-week course that meets once a week at the CSU Recreation Center. In this course, you will learn the basics of anatomy & physiology, nutrition, safety guidelines, various group fitness class formats and legal issues in regards to being a group fitness instructor. At the end of the program you will have the knowledge and skills you need to take the Group Fitness Instructor Certification!
Week 1: Anatomy and kinesiology basics
Week 2: Nutrition overview
Week 3: Class components
Week 4: Cueing
Week 5: Resistance training
Week 6: Cardiovascular training
Week 7: Safety guidelines and injury prevention
Week 8: Exam preparation
Week 9/10: Optional exam review
Group will meet Wednesday evening from 6pm-8pm
Participants must attend ALL sessions in order to satisfactorily complete the program.
If there is a known conflict or an unexpected emergency (student must provide
documentation) then the materials from ONE class may be made-up on the students time.
Beginning in the Spring semester, participants will be assigned a group fitness class that they
will shadow. The instructor of the class will serve as their mentor in guiding their instruction as
the participant is slowly integrated into teaching portions of the class.
There will be an additional 2 weeks optional review period before the AFAA apex in February.
Participants do not need to be students at CSU.
Once successfully completing the program, participants will be "Campus Rec Certified" to
teach classes. Students who enroll in this program will have the knowledge and preparation to
take a national certification in desired area. This program is purely an instructional workshop
that allows participants to gain valuable, practical experience in the fitness industry. Once
participants have gone through and passed the training sessions, they will be allowed to sub
for classes (at the discretion of the course instructor) for 1 semester with their "Campus Rec
Certified" status. After the semester is over, participants must successfully obtain a NCCAcertified certification (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, etc.) to continue training at the Rec Center. Some
classes such as cycle, yoga or Zumba may require a specialized certification.
Participant cost: $70
