CSU is proud to be affiliated with the American Red Cross for their swim lessons as well as safety certifications.

The Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program teaches people of all ages and varying abilities to swim and be safe in and around water. Swimming readiness and swim instruction courses with in the Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program include Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim and Adult Swim courses. These courses take an inclusive approach that emphasizes skill development in conjunction with water safety and drowning prevention education. The Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program also includes a variety of water safety courses and presentations to help teach all age groups how to enjoy the water safely and how to stay safe in the event of an emergency.

CSU Swim Descriptions



Parent and Child Aquatics
Ages: 6 months-3 years
The purpose of this class is to teach safe behaviors in, on and around the water and to develop swimming readiness. Parents and children engage in water exploration activities with the objective of having fun and becoming comfortable in, on and around the water.


Preschool Aquatics

Ages: 4-5 years old
This class aims to promote the developmentally appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills by young children. Red Cross Preschool Aquatics teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression through 3 levels of courses.


Swim School 1-3

Ages: 6-14 years old
This program consists of 3 comprehensive levels that teach students of varying ages and abilities how to swim skillfully and safely. Each level includes training in basic water safety in addition to aquatic and safety skills taught in a logical progression. The object is to teach people to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water.
  • Level 1-Introduction to Water Skills-Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water. No prerequisites required.
  • Level 2-Fundamental Aquatic Skills-Build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1.
  • Level 3-Stroke Development-Build on skills in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency on their own in a pool environment. Students learn to swim without support in this level.

*Children registered for Level 1 & 2 will be divided into groups based on skill competencies.


Stroke School 4-6

Ages: 6-14 years old
This program consists of 3 comprehensive levels that teach students of varying ages and abilities how to swim skillfully and safely. Each level includes training in basic water safety in addition to aquatic and safety skills taught in a logical progression. The object is to teach people to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water.
  • Level 4-Stroke Improvement-Improve participantsí proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Level 3.
  • Level 5-Stroke Refinement-Help participants refine their performance in all six swimming strokes (i.e., front crawl/freestyle, back crawl/backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke).
  • Level 6-Swimming and Skill Proficiency-Refine strokes so participants swim with greater efficiency and effectiveness over longer distances.

Adult Swim

Ages: 15+
These courses are for teens and adults with differing levels of swimming ability.
  • Stage 1-Learning the Basics
  • Stage 2-Improving Skills and Swimming Strokes
  • Stage 3-Swimming for Fitness

*Registration for all classes ends 1 week prior to the start of class.

Registration

  • Registration can occur in person at the Main Welcome Desk in Recreation Center or online.
  • No refunds for cancellation by participants.
  • Transfers available up until close of registration for current program.
  • Full refunds for any programs canceled by Campus Recreation Services.
