Pre-Professional Health Programs

Pre-Medical

This site will explain the phases of medical education, beginning with Undergraduate Preparation, and what is to be expected at each phase.  An enriching undergraduate experience at Cleveland State University is the first step in your journey to becoming a doctor. Cleveland State University pre-medicine alumni have been accepted to many outstanding medical schools including:  Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, Ohio State University College of Medicine, Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, School of Medicine at Wright State University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, and more.

Undergraduate Preparation

Medical schools seek applicants with a strong foundation in the natural sciences and have established minimum course requirements for admission.  Medical schools do not require that applicants have a specific major because the essential skills of acquiring, synthesizing, applying and communicating information can be acquired through a wide variety of studies.  Pre-Medicine students at Cleveland State University are encouraged to follow their natural interests and curiosity when selecting a major.  Cleveland State students become engaged in learning, research opportunities and scholarly endeavors that come from a variety of disciplines, assuring them the educational maturity and character development that medical schools seek, and the scientific knowledge base necessary for completion of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

CSU Alumni Guide to Medical School

In 2016, past alumni, spearheaded by CSU Alumni Mark Biro, put together a guide for Pre-Medical students to learn more about the application process. Working with Brittany Wampler in Pre-Professional Health Programs and assisting student intern Lauren Bieler, the "Every Road is Different: The CSU Students Prospective Guide to Medical School" was created. Thank you to all CSU undergraduate and post baccalaureate alumni for your contributions to the book. Students participating included:

  • Mark Biro (CWRU School of Medicine and CSU Alumni)
  • Thomas Bomberger (CWRU School of Medicine and CSU Post Baccalaureate Student)
  • Domenic Craner (NEOMED and CSU Post Baccalaureate Student)
  • Scott Fulton (Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and CSU Alumni)
  • Shari Moore (AT Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and CSU Post Baccalaureate Student)
