In addition to the required coursework, students anticipating applying to a Doctor of Pharmacy program should plan to participate in extracurricular activities.
Cleveland State offers the opportunity for a variety of hands-on experiences:
- Faculty Research - students are encouraged to get to know the research interests of their faculty. Many students gain valuable experiences working in laboratories, and some have even co-authored papers with their faculty as a result of their research efforts.
- COSHP Research Day – each spring, students are invited to display their research alongside faculty projects at a university-wide poster session.
- Co-op/Internship/Volunteering/Shadowing – the Cleveland area offers a variety of opportunities for Pre-Pharmacy students to gain experience in a pharmacy setting, or in other more general health care settings. Students can work with Cleveland State’s Career Services to identify opportunities, or may independently arrange for their own opportunity.
- Student Organizations - students can elect to join the Pre-Pharmacy student organization, Active Rx – Students of Pharmacy, or the American Medical Student Association (AMSA). Both organizations meet regularly to allow students to network and to provide additional information on applying to professional schools.
