MA Satellite Flyer
The MA in mathematics offered by the Department of Mathematics has traditionally been a summer-only program, scheduled to allow in-service high school math teachers to take coursework during summer break. However, some teachers would prefer to complete their coursework in a more compact time-frame, by taking additional coursework during the regular school year. To facilitate this, the Department of Mathematics is offering, for the first time, an MA course in the evenings during a regular school-year semester.

MTH-593/493 Conics
After a review of conic
sections-ellipses, parabolas and hyperbolas, and other basic topics, we will
move on to viewing conics from a more general perspective. Ordinary conics
may look innocent enough, but in reality they like to hang out in the fourth
dimension. In fact, we will realize that their natural habitat is 4-space,
and all sorts of unifying things happen when we make that journey. To help
us in our explorations, we will regularly use Maple and Cabri (a popular
geometry-drawing program) installed in the computer lab. In addition, the
text comes supplied with a disk containing 36 interactive conics applets,
and these will let us explore many of the ideas in the course.
