The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a health-related career. Programs of study either prepare students to enter a graduate program in a specific healthcare field, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, or physician assistant science, or prepare students to enter a health-related field or to develop skills and knowledge that will prepare them to work in healthcare generally.
The curriculum emphasizes the development of self-directed and engaged learning skills needed for independent and life-long learning. It also promotes the importance of culture and ethical considerations relevant to all aspects of healthcare practice. Recognizing that common program objectives can be achieved in a variety of ways, the curriculum allows students the flexibility to plan a course of study that best suits their professional and educational needs through five tracks of study: Associate Degree Completion Track, General Interest Track, Pre-Physician Assistant Science Track, Pre-Podiatry Track, and Pre-Therapy Track.
Students who major in Health Sciences and continue on to complete a graduate degree in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Science, and Podiatry will have many employment options as these fields are targeted as being health care professions with high growth potential. Important employment opportunities exist in community-based agencies, the school systems, long-term care, public health agencies, and in research.
Those who complete a BSHS and are seeking employment opportunities in a health-related area, job opportunities vary depending on the student’s course of study in the program. This track is designed for the student already holding an associate degree in a health-related field who wishes to complete a baccalaureate degree or pursue a graduate degree in Health Sciences. In addition to the Health Sciences Core courses, students interested in this track must complete a minimum of 53 credits in an area of emphasis, which also includes the Capstone Requirement.
Students work with an adviser to design an Area of Emphasis reflecting their particular interests and the skills required for the kinds of positions they wish to pursue. Highly recommended certificate programs are the Gerontological Studies Certificate; the Certificate in Culture, Communication and Health; and the Bioethics Certificate. Concentrations in Health and Wellness, Community Health, and Human Factors are also recommended. The program has identified pre-approved electives and areas of study (link to areas of emphasis recommendation). Students must also complete a Capstone Requirement. These credits will be applied toward the Area of Emphasis.
2 + 2 Articulation Agreements: A special articulation agreement is applied to students who have completed an Associate's Degree in Allied Health from Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) or Lakeland Community College (pending). The 2+2 Agreements (link) streamline the process for students who have completed any one of the twenty-one allied health majors at Cuyahoga Community College and Lakeland Community College by predetermining coursework that may be applied toward the Health Sciences major. Depending on the allied health program completed at Tri-C or Lakeland, students will need to complete anywhere between 16 – 24 additional credits toward their Health Sciences major, including the Capstone Requirement, in addition to the Health Sciences Core courses. We must remind students who pursue the 2+2 that they must still complete all General Education Requirements, and College Degree Requirements, which include a minimum of 42 upper division credit hours (300-400 level courses).
This track is designed for students interested in health-related careers but who are uncertain which profession they prefer at this time. A student choosing the pre-physician assistant science track must complete the 53 credits of programmatic prerequisites for the Master of Science in Health Sciences Physician Assistant Science Track (a joint program administered in partnership with Cuyahoga Community College), including HSC 484 for the capstone requirement, and the health sciences core. PSY 311 or an upper level statistics course is required and must be taken to satisfy either the core or included in the area of emphasis if the student has already taken MTH 147.
This track provides students with improved and more convenient access to the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine Degree. This accelerated program allows students to earn a BSHS from Cleveland State as they progress towards the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine Degree from Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM). The track consists of three years of study at the pre-professional undergraduate level at Cleveland State and four years of study at the professional and clinical level at OCPM. In addition to the above approved course series, students must complete the Capstone Requirement. These credits will be applied toward the Area of Emphasis.
Students choosing this track complete the prerequisite courses needed to enter either the Master of Occupational Therapy Program or Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Cleveland State University. In addition to the above approved course series, students must complete the Capstone Requirement. These credits will be applied toward the Area of Emphasis.
The Health Sciences Upper Division Honors Program and University Scholars Program are designed for the Health Sciences major who is considering graduate-level training and seeks engaged learning opportunities in research, clinical, and/or cultural competency tracks. Application for admission to either of these Programs must be made at least 30 days before the semester in which the applicant wishes to enter, typically the spring or summer semester before their junior or senior year. A minimum overall GPA of 3.5 is required for admission to the Honors Program and 3.25 is required for the Scholars Program. University Honors students and other students majoring in Health Sciences who meet the minimum GPA requirement may enter the Honor’s Program. University Scholars students majoring in Health Science who meet the minimum GPA requirement may complete the Scholar’s Program. Credits earned in the Honors and Scholars Programs will apply towards the major.

*Contract Courses may be taken by Honors Students ONLY: The Honors Contract Course compromises the community of an honors course, but it permits both students and faculty to pursue the creativity, uniqueness, independence, and academically enhanced standards of honors in a special setting. Students must initiate an Honors Contract Course Petition in writing by consulting with the advisor and faculty member, proposing a course of study, identifying appropriate outcomes or experiences, and specifying criteria for evaluation. A form, available on the University Honors Web site is provided to help students and instructors formalize the Honors Contract Course. The petition for Honors Contract Course should be submitted at the time of pre-registration, with final proposal due prior to the end of the semester before the term in which the Honors Contract Course will be taken.
