The Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) is a post-professional degree designed to prepare individuals for emerging leadership roles in the rapidly changing health care environment and to enhance opportunities for career advancement. Emphasis is on independent, self-directed learning and the development of diverse roles.
This program is intended for practicing health care professionals who want to enhance their career options and achieve increased excellence in the provision of patient services. Students will learn to identify and analyze emerging practice issues, to articulate strategies and to measure outcomes. They also will position themselves to take on the added responsibilities expected of care providers in today's rapidly changing service environment.
Online education allows you to schedule coursework around the demands of your personal and professional life. However, Cleveland State's Master of Science in Health Sciences is a rigorous educational experience that does not compromise the intellectual and professional benefits of graduate education. Each course is designed to allow students the potential for maximum achievement including the benefits of open discussions and peer learning. Our online MSHS offerings are not electronic correspondence courses, but contemporary versions of the traditional classroom experience. The courses utilize bulletin boards, chatrooms and email to facilitate full interaction with faculty, professional experts and other students.
Most students in the MSHS program are working health care professionals who take 1-2 courses at a time. Students who wish to do so may take six or more courses per year, and may graduate in two years or less. All courses are offered online (via the Internet) except for HSC 504: Seminar in Health Sciences. This course, which is usually taken toward the end of one's coursework, must be taken on-campus at Cleveland State University as a 10-day intensive experience. Students also may transfer appropriate coursework taken at other universities and apply it toward the degree.
The MSHS is offered on-campus in traditional classroom settings, as well as online. Admitted students may take courses through either or both formats. At this time, two additional areas of emphasis are offered only on-campus: Health Sciences Education and Health Sciences Management. However, it is expected that both of these will be added to the online curriculum in the near future.
You don't have to be a "techie" to succeed in this program. We have designed the online MSHS to emphasize the course content; the technology is easy. If you can use email and access the Internet, you probably have all it requires to take advantage of the program. However, we assume no previous technical knowledge and offer online instructions for everything you need to know. Moreover, out staff will get you started and help you solve any problems you might encounter. We also have guidelines and suggestions that will make learning faster and easier and let you focus on knowledge acquisition.
